Cover 32 continues to break down Cam using PFF's metrics. Cam good vs. blitz

Yesterday, Reid Foster of Cover 32 pretty much confirmed that Cam Newton plays better under center as compared to the shotgun, and was better on third and long than short and medium.  Today he is saying that Cam is better when facing the blitz  than not. Citing PFF's "advanced" metrics again, Newton is below average when there is no pressure and no blitz.  The good news is that NFL QBs are always getting blitz and pressured, and this is where Cam is excelling.

Cam is truly excellent when opposing teams get pressure off of blitzes as he ranked as the fifth best quarterback in the league in these scenarios.

-Big Takeaway

Cam isn’t going to carve up opposing defenses with a clean pocket the way a guy like Carson Palmer (sixth best quarterback versus no pressure) does. However, Newton also isn’t going to be completely shut down when pressure gets in his face like Palmer (46th best quarterback versus pressure). Considering how often quarterbacks face pressure in the NFL (and that’s not even factoring in the Panthers’ mediocre offensive line), that’s a pretty good trade-off.

Hopefully with better protection, along with a more of a traditional running game (where the RBs get the preponderance of the yardage), as well as a more sure-handed receiving corps that runs crisper routes, we will really see our fourth year QB take a leap with and without the pressure.

All these stats are fine, but they will not tell the whole story until Cam has the tools and weapons around him that will enable him to maximize his talent.

Well.........  yeah.  If there's no pressure it sometimes means that the opposing team is dedicating the extra manpower to smothering our already crappy WR unit last season.    Our guys seemed to barely get open when the box was being stacked to stop the run,  I'd hate to imagine how our guys looked if the primary focus of a defense was to stop our WRs.

I can recall an Arizona game where the blitz was coming right up the middle, everyone knew it and we still got kilt.  Cam takes a lot of sacks so if you include those, I think the numbers become more true.  Now when he does get rid of the ball, he is successful.

Hence why I'm excited about Trey Turner.  Most quarterbacks elude pressure by stepping into the pocket while an edge rusher blows past them.  When Newton is pressured it is generally up the middle, and is a much worse scenario to be in as it takes away your ability to step into throwing the ball.

Losing 4 guards to IR is going to cause some deficiencies in the middle of the line.
