Panthers find ways to chill out between practices

8/5/09 Carolina Panthers kicker (4) John Kasay tries to encourage a young fan to join him in the end zone to watch drills during practice at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC Wednesday morning. The young boy didn't accept the offer. JEFF SINER - [email protected]

The pressures of training camp are notorious. There are the two-a-day full-pad practices, hours of classroom and separation from family. But the Panthers know how to cope with the grind.

Receiver Steve Smith

For Smith, training camp gives him a break from reading the “Last Lecture” by the late Randy Pauch. Pauch was a computer science professor at Carnegie Melon who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The book is based on his last lecture titled “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” He died last year.

“I've kind of had to take a step back,” Smith said. “I'm kind of at that emotional part. I had to put it down a little bit and take a breather.”

Kicker Rhys Lloyd

Lloyd unwinds online. He tweets from camp whenever he can.

“It's fun to do,” he said. “It's good to stay in touch, and the fans appreciate it.”

He tweets about everything from the day's meal (beef pot pie on Wednesday) to passing his drug test. Lloyd's love for Twitter draws some ribbing from quarterback Jack Delhomme, which has provided more fodder for the Tweets.

“Jake's probably my number one nemesis at the moment,” Lloyd said. “Every time he does something, he turns to me and says ‘Why don't you put that on Twitter?'”

“He's moving on in his years and he doesn't understand the technology,” Lloyd joked. “I give him some grief about that kind of stuff. That's the best part of (camp) is the locker room banter.”

Quarterback Jake Delhomme

Delhomme definitely doesn't tweet. Heck, he barely listens to his iPod. He said after practice he uses his computer to catch up with his family and read about their race horses.

Delhomme grew up in Breaux Bridge, La., which has deep roots in horse racing. His father has trained horses for 35 years.

“I get in and I follow my horse stuff,” he said of how he spends his down time. “It's camp; you're supposed to dive into what you're doing. That's why we're here.”

PL, givin' the ladies our special TC reports! :)

You know what you need 2 do!

I whipped out my iPhone to take a shot, but it was too late!!! (I think I was a bit frozen by the sight.) My daughter got a good one of Jake and the other QBs swatting on the sidelines. I'll post that one when I can wrest it from her!

I'll never forget last year, when Jake pulled a "hey, kid" moment with one of my Pals and ripped off his shirt and tossed it to the kid. Jake, walking away, in his tight white pants and no shirt ... oh, my gosh.

Yeah, there's talk, avatars, sigs all over the place about women's bods ... the female members of the Huddle demand equal rights ... or at least less bitchin' in the rare times we get to relish football for the beautiful bods some of the players have.

I won't bitch at all if you have an avatar with big boobies.
