Newton nearly the same as Rodgers when passing in 2014 (minus 2nd downs where he falters).

Cover 32 is reporting that Cam Newton is strikingly similar to Aaron Rodgers passing the ball per Pro Football Focus with that one big exception: second downs. They noted that PFF uses its own metrics that try and leave out stats/plays that skew the numbers  (like screen passes for big yardage), but the writer believes that Panthers fans should be encouraged (notwithstanding how PFF rates Luke Kuechly).

Pro Football Focus uses a different grading system than QB rating to evaluate quarterbacks to try and really gauge how the quarterback himself is doing and not just how the offense as a whole is. This is to prevent quarterbacks from benefitting from throwing a two-yard screen pass that a running back takes 80 yards to the house. On the flip side, it helps quarterbacks from being punished when they throw accurate passes that are dropped by receivers. Using this system, they graded every quarterback by down.

-On first down, Cam Newton graded out as the 13th best quarterback in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers was 14th.

-On third down, Newton’s grade was the 11th best of all the quarterbacks. Rodgers’? 10th.

-On fourth down, Newton was the best quarterback in the NFL. Second best? Yep, Aaron Rodgers.

The article also notes that Cam is at his best on third and long (as opposed to short or medium).  **remember this is about passing***

It also notes that Cam is "significantly better under center than in Shotgun."

To me this is just more evidence that Cam has grown significantly, and this despite having suspect protection and weapons.

FYI: Cam was always better better "under center"--even during his rookie season. This is why we all complained about Chud taking away the pro-sets in 2012. Cam was also great during the blitz his rookie season as well.

Not sure I care about Aaron Rodgers so much in the fist two stats, as they were 10-13 other players in front of them to begin with (if you put much faith in those stats).

Quite frankly, it's stuff we already heard or new before, except now he's linked with Aaron Rodgers.

Nonetheless, thanks.

We go to shotgun in obvious passing situations. In 2012 Chud was trying to remove that predictability by going into shotgun on earlier downs in order to make it more effective.

Unfortunately, it made the Read Option more slow developing and subjected Cam to more unnecessary hits (whether he actually ran the ball or not), amongst other things

Anyone who watches football knows that Rodgers is on another level as a passer. No metrics will tell you that but if you watch both of them you see it. Take your homer glasses off, use metrics when they confirm your bias, bitch about them when they don't.I

Uh, I don't think anyone is arguing with the fact that Aaron Rodgers is the superior passer at this stage of his career. He's a 9 year veteran.

Whatever. And I am not necessarily moved by stats and metrics one way or another, but Rodgers has benefited greatly from a more pass-happy philosophy, better receivers, a more complete receiving corps, and arguably better play calling.

This statistical analysis is in regards to 2014.  I doubt Rodgers would have done any better with our guys last year. I doubt it seriously.

Basically, the jury is still out.  After all the dust settles and the careers are compared, then we'll see a clearer picture.

cam has always been better from under center than shotgun which is weird because he rarely did that at auburn

That's because our tackles suck so much, the DEs get to him quicker by bull rushing them whereas under center they have to go around the OT.

Possibly has something to do with it although I wouldn't say gross sucked and bell wasn't as bad as people make him out to be but I think cam thrives in pro sets in general.

I would hesitate to compare Cam Newton to any other QB. He has a different body and skill set from anyone that has ever played the position... ever.

How many times do you see Rodgers running by Safeties and Corners? Or juking LBs and DEs to the ground? And then running over said LB on the goal line?

Cam is not as polished a passer as Rodgers and Brady, or maybe even Luck and Wilson. But who cares? None of them are as big, as strong, or possess his whodini-like ability to escape defenders.

This is Cam's 4th season and he finally has a WR as big, strong and athletic as he is. Probably pretty difficult for someone of his stature to throw to smaller targets. Just logical.

    • And he still has one more win and a $110M contract, go figure?
    • People looking at the offense negatively need to step back a minute and remember that expectations were mighty low this year. We have a lot of young guys and rookies. And our qb is a newby in the system he is in with a new coach who has never been a head coach and signal caller combined.  This is a work in progress so only an approach which recognizes incremental improvement is valid for best measuring where we are versus  demanding immediate success after a 2-15 campaign last year.
