Cam Newton was statistically one of the worst passers on 2nd down in 2013

I believe it. Cam has gotten much better over the years, but he still makes some bad throws or will miss open receivers. I've never paid any attention to what down it was when he makes a gaffe, but hopefully he'll build on a great year and be even better moving forward.

I bet most people will ignore the stat that says cam was one of the best third down and the best 4th down passer to focus on the 2nd downs. Cam does still have a lot more room for growth but I am very happy with where he is now.

Isn't 2nd down by nature going to look statistically worse anyway? The pressure isn't on to covert on 2nd down. That's what 3rd and 4th are for. And we all know Cam is fuggin money on those downs.

Plus our whole philosophy was to have long sustaining drives. So  A. We are either going to call a bull poo no gainer to eat the clock or B. Take a shot down field. Both have a risk of minimal gain on 2nd down.

I know I'm not alone in wondering why the emphasis is on Cam being near the worst in the league on 2nd down as opposed to Cam being near the top of the league on  3rd down, the most important passing down in football.

Which leads me to wonder if Cam is good on 3rd down, the most difficult passing down, then why isn't he also good on 2nd down?

My first thought is playcalling.

That's a combination of things. Cam missed a few throws here and there, but inconsistent play calls were absolute drive killers at times. I recall Shula calling some baffling plays on 2nd down, like long developing bombs down field, which set up quite a few 3rd and long situations.

That is not to say that all of it was Shula's fault though, at times our WR's simply could not get any separation.

Like I've said before, we can only hope that our new hire of John Ramsdell will assist Shula in this department.
