2014/15 UEFA Champions League

Bayern needs to upgrade their central defenders in the worst way. Obviously Messi will make anyone look silly back there but Boateng is frustrating every time I watch Bayern play. Would have loved to see both teams play these legs at full strength.

they needed to upgrade them eighteen months ago. Boateng is worthless. Bring Jupp back!

while I've never thought of Boateng as world-XI-class, he is very good for the German National Team:

Against Messi in 2014 World Cup:

Boateng and Hummels were the two center backs for Germany in the 2014 World Cup Final vs Argentina. Both of them played the whole game (including all of regular time and all of overtime) and they held off Messi, Higuan, Sergio Agüero and Palacio without any problems in Germany's 1-0 victory. From his wiki page: "Boeteng won 83 percent of his duels [29] and made a last-ditch clearance against Lionel Messi in the fortieth minute. Several media sources named him as the Man of the Match. [30][31][32]"

Against Christiano Ronaldo in 2012 Euro:

Will never forget Boateng playing as a rb in EURO 2012 and

keeping Ronaldo in his pocket

National Post, June 2012;

"Portugal's offence is very reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo, which is why Germany can praise defender Jerome Boateng, for his work in keeping the Real Madrid star off the scoreboard. ... Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo remained anonymous, completely absorbed by German right back Jerome Boateng.

...

Man of the match: Jerome Boateng, defender

Ronaldo was wearing a jacket designed by Jerome Boateng; his own shadow could not have followed him closer. The Bayern Munich defender was never tricked by a step over, or got too close to be conned by Ronaldo’s infamous playacting. Boateng kept the Real Madrid star within arms reach, and gave him little room and little time to create."

But yeah Boateng had a bad game yesterday and he got beat bad on that 2nd Messi goal. But I'm just chalking that up to a fluke play. I've seen two of Juventus' central defenders have equally-as-bad plays recently that gave up an easy goal (in CL and in Coppa Italia semi-finals) and that was definitely a fluke for both of them. Both of them are still great

Remember Steven Gerrard's famous slip last year in the huge game vs Chelsea where he fell on his ass and gave Demba Ba an easy goal to win the game for Chelsea? Gerrard is still great

Remember Jameis Winston mysteriously falling backwards on his ass and fumbling the ball away in the huge game vs Oregon? He still went #1 overall

Tough play for Boateng to get posterized [by Messi], but he's too good to be reduced to a Freddy Weis punchline.

Men in Blazers @ MenInBlazers

Messi just posterized Boateng like Michael Jordan over Patrick

That is the most frustrating thing about him. He has good games because he is talented but more often than not he is mediocre and makes awful decisions. Schalke, Porto, Barca, and Gladbach just since the winter break he played terribly and cost the team, and those are just the games I was able to see.

I would talk about Real last year too but that would make it tougher for me to block it out.

only once in Champions League history has a side lost the first leg of a knock-out tie by three goals and progressed to the next round.

...

Barcelona are in utterly devastating form having won 28 of their last 30 games. Enrique’s men have not been defeated by a three-goal margin all season. Since Bayern’s 3-0 win at the Nou Camp in May 2013, Barcelona have not tasted defeat by a three-goal margin once.

    • Mayes has a weight advantage at Center.  Christensen’s versatility is valuable but better on the outside than the interior IMO. Mays can also play multiple spots along the interior. I think we’re in the best position we’ve been in years with the OL.
    • Back n 94 or 85 (We had just drafted Biakabatuka and Moose) I was at an OTA in Rock Hill and I bumped into Donnie Shell, the player personnel director, I believe.  It was just after the AFC playoff final when Harbaugh was the Colt QB and he had a pass dropped in the end zone that would have beaten Pittsburgh.  I grew up a Colt fan--so I told him how it made me sick, and he laughed--very nice guy.  I then asked him about the Hall of Fame, and he said that he appreciated the thought and he prays for it, but there are so many of his teammates from that Steeler team who deserved it more--he said that it probably makes it more difficult for him because they do not want to let in every Steeler and they could argue that I was better because of my teammates.  He was very humble.  I told him that I was only a young kid, but I remember him bringing it just as much as the others--I was so happy when he was inducted--even after he laughed at my Colts.
