Give Me the Low Down on Charlotte, NC

So I'll just copy and paste from the other thread:

Highest sales taxes in the state, highest property taxes in the state.

Infrastructure is atrocious. Interstate system has been struggling to catch up for 20 years. Traffic is horrible.

Uptown/downtown is rather sterile and generic- nothing to really make you remember, "Charlotte!"

Usual mix of upscale restaurants and art galleries trying to make in-roads.

There's just no real draw to the city. There are so many more smaller cities around that have much better selling points than Charlotte- Greenville SC, Charleston, Asheville...

And to add:

Since moving to the east coast in 1992, I've lived in Greensboro, Asheville and Eastern NC and own a couple properties on the southern NC coast. My wife, who is originally from NYC area and has lived here since 1985, has been offered a couple opportunities in Charlotte over the years and, despite the fact we had PSLs for 17 years and travel to Charlotte many times during the season, there is nothing that is drawing us to live there.

Definite high tax rate.. I pay 8% now in NY so I am use to it.

Out of curiosity, what are some culture items that similar sized cities have that Charlotte does not?

Not much I can think of. I travel a lot in the US and Charlotte has as much as any other town. Maybe not the historical landmarks like the major cities in the northern 10 of the original 13 colonies can boast, but there is plenty to do.

Thanks for helping make my point. Outside the BOA you might be able to discern it's the home of the Carolina Panthers. Once inside, however, it's often difficult to distinguish just who the home team is. Not to mention the ultimate in generic NFL logo in the middle of the field.

Can't argue with this. Even our first home playoff game in 5 years had 15,000 Forty Niner fans. fugers.

An Old Town (San Diego) type historic district that shows the history of the city's growth, complete with museums and original structures.

A Fisherman's Wharf or Chinatown type area that shows the origins and growth of the city, complete with museums and original structures.

A Boston Commons type area that again shows the historic rise and growth of the city, complete with museums and original structures

So those cities are the same size and same age as Charlotte?

Keeping in mind Charlotte is the south (slavery, tenement homes, Jim Crow) I'd rather not have too much of a historic area. I prefer current Brevard Street over 1920s Brevard Street.

eta: Concord and Kannapolis have dozens of shuttered textile mills. Do we really need 30 more in Charlotte to boast about history?

I think one legitimate beef on the culture side is we don't necessarily have as many diverse cultural restaurants as some other cities. I'm not sure this is true but I suspect it.

Having said that if you live in LKN go to Thai emerald restauarant http://thethaiemerald.com/. I thought it was legit (like run by actual Thai people). Just discovers it last week.
