Huddle question:June cuts are days away...what will happen

Joe Thomas, Calvin Johnson and Richard Sherman will be cut and we will sign them for vet minimum, afterwards Gettleman will board his space ship and fly back home to his home planet Hog Mollie to the capital Blue Goose where he'll eat a healthy dinner that doesn't involve clam chowder.

My thoughts exactly!

How the fug do June 1 cuts work?

Steve Smith was designated a June 1 right?

Instead of taking the cap hit of all guaranteed and already paid bonuses the moment the player is cut, June 1 cuts spread the hit over two years. Not evenly though, only the guaranteed and bonus cap hits for the current year hit the current year's cap, and then the total for all remaining years hit the cap in the following year. For instance, let's look at DeAngelo:

If cut today (as a normal cut) his cap hit would be $9.6m. This doesn't help though, since keeping him only costs $6m. However, as a June 1 cut only 1 year of signing bonus ($3.2m) and 1 year of his restructure bonus ($800k) hit this year's cap. A savings of $2m vs. keeping him.

However, the remaining $5.6m hits the following year, which is still a savings of about $750k vs. keeping him. Worth noting he's due another $1m option bonus next offseason (Steve was due a $3m bonus before he was cut).

Speaking of Steve, he was set to count $7m against our cap this year: $4m base, $2m signing bonus, $1m of $3m bonus he was due (spread out over 3 years). We cut him before the bonus was due, so he never saw that, and then spread the cap hit instead of taking the $9m dead money hit.

$3m of his $4m base was guaranteed, so that plus his signing bonus ($2m) for a total cap hit of $5m. So we saved $2m this year, however, $1m came off the day we cut him (the bonus that never hit), so come June 2 we'll only have an extra $1m in cap space.

The main thing with Steve was the future cap hits. His hits would've been $9m and $11m over the last two years, but after the cut the hits are only $4m and $0.

ISn't CJ a huge June 1 cut?

Cutting CJ prior to the 2014 seasom would provide only $160,000 in cap relief.

Cutting him after 2014 and before the 2015 season would provide $8,580,000 in cap relief.

Cutting him after 2015 and before the 2016 season would provide $11,000,000 in cap relief.
