Pawpaw is very interesting... somewhere between banana, mango, sweet potato, and... gasoline, perhaps?

My grandmother in Thomasville used to make persimmon pie and pudding and it was pretty good. She had persimmon tree in her back yard.

I've never had Pawpaw pie myself it sounded interesting until you added the gasoline part. LOL

honestly, it could very well be our local mango alternative, but there is a very distinctive chemical flavor to it and it is off putting.

I love persimmons though, and  I do swallow the seeds.

If/when you find yourself in the Caribbean, seek out like a sidewinder missile gineps, passion fruits, and local mangoes. Guineps/gineps/quineps/kineps are grape sized fruits in a thick green peeling, and have a bit of pink fruit around a big seed. They grow on trees, in bunches.. They are a bit sour if not perfectly ripe, but they are fantastic. Last Summer, on my last day in St John, I packed about 10 pounds of them, and the TSA couldn't care less. Passion fruit are cased in a thick, oblong peel in yellow. They have to be cut in half with a knife, and the jelly-like fruit has to be spooned out, but it is also quite good. The mangoes in the Caribbean are a world apart from the ones you buy in Food Lion. They are better than sex while getting your back scratched and getting a pedicure at the same time....drop dead gorgeous good... unspeakably good.

Try a pawpaw whenever you can. You might like it, and, if nothing else, you still have the novelty and an ice breaker. Eat the ones that are soft and purple, after they fall from the tree.

In my opinion, nothing beats ripe muscadines or dead ripe figs, fresh from the bush.

Y'all be careful about discussing pies that do not contain fruit filling. It got ugly around here when I mentioned a chocolate pie once.

There is no such thing as chocolate pie. There is only chocolate pudding in a pie like form.

I am willing to bet that you oppose turkey burgers and microwave bacon too.  I bet you don't think it is right that they put cheese in a can.  This is the 21st century, and there are marvels amongst us (yes, marvels).  Although I am traditional in some respects (for example, I liked the Flintstones, hated the Jetsons), I am not afraid to expand my cultural horizons. I personally think the creator of the chocolate pie is a genius, right up there with the inventors of paint-by-number portraits and the Pocket Fisherman.

Lou Ann Goodell invented the chocolate pie in 1964 when little Roger was a tot.  She wanted to expand the context of what we know as pie.  She added 2 more minutes to the baking process and started shipping her pies to Europe, Mexico, and parts of Canada.  Roger took note, and with Chocolate pie all over his mouth, he flew to his tree house and took to some mad journal-writing.  I think you know the rest of the story.
