Kiawah

Laid back plus you can drop into Charleston for a nice dinner

This. Kiawah is awesome. Try Wyndham Vacation Rentals at Kiawah, or VRBO.

Kiawah can be pretty pricey in the summer. We have some friends that stay next door at Seabrook Island and say it's great as well and a little more affordable.

I used to go to Sunset beach all the time as a kid, but that was roughly 8billion years ago. Anyone know if it's still nice, or if it's turned into a giant poo hole?

I've had a house on Sunset for almost 18 years now. probably hasn't changed a lot because there is no commercial property on the island save for the convenience store and the ice cream/bike rental shop.

The old one lane cable=operated swing bridge over the ICW was replaced with an up & over 2-lane bridge similar to the one at Ocean Isle. With the old bridge you had to plan when to leave the island to make the scheduled bridge opening. Since there are less than 100 year-round inhabitants on the island, the new bridge has created something Sunset never had before- crime. With the old bridge, there was no crime because there was no way to get off the island. The new bridge and lack of people living there full time has increased the number of break-ins on the island.

The other cool thing about Sunset is it's the only south-facing beach in NC and it's the last beach before the SC border. The beach is actually gaining sand as a south-facing beach while the north end of Ocean Isle is full of condemned homes ready to be washed away. It's a mess up there. My house is on 40th, the last street on the west side of the island. The view from my widow's walk is great- I can see all the way to Little River and I get sunsets every night...
