Prediction: Kelvin Benjamin > Sammy Watkins

Recommended Posts

Even stats are meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Pieces of a puzzle are being acquired.

Sammy catches 4 passes for 160 yards and 1 TD in a losing effort. KB catches 9 passes for 90 yards and 3 TDs in a winning effort. Who had the better game - for their team?

Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers need a BIG target that can win the 50/50 passes over DBs. The homerun threat doesn't really fit the offensive philosophy. Good to have, and you'll need it every now and then. But a guy that can go up and move the chains on 3rd and 7, and muscle defenders in the endzone is more important right now.

Makes sense.

That was probably too easy. Let's make it a little more difficult and say Sammy caught 4 passes for 210 yards and 1 TD. KB stays the same. He still had the better game - for his team, because Buffalo couldn't close the deal on Sammy's big plays leading to a "lose".

If anyone watched Carolina play SF in the playoffs, they'll agree that a RZ threat and a competent OG or two is what they needed to move on to Seattle.

I'm excited about him too, but that top GIF would get him a 15 yard taunting penalty in the NFL.

exactly this.

he could have doubled down and pancaked the second guy who ran right past him.  he had enough time to square himself up.  i think he's smart enough to watch the tape and see that.  i know the coaches will remind him.

in fairness i think i would want to gloat a sec too.  damn fine block.

i think benjamin has great hands, but can he catch cam's heat?

cam throws the ball as hard as anyone.   its really the only glaring flaw in his game.

From what Im seeing on the tape here and there, he's very comfortable in the air. Interesting basketball background, I suspect his reflexes are good for short passes as well. Down field he knows he's the biggest guy and appears to want to use it every play. I think thats where he needs to change his mindset. Use it when you need to but have faith in guile, speed, and misdirection too. Thats how Megatron plays.

Hands look good, brother, Idk. Just seems he needs to learn from Ricky and the fellas for a bit to sharpen up his game. As far as Cam's bullets go, its kind of like back in the day when you go to the batting cage. You could crank the speed to different levels and it might be hard to catch them at first but you eventually build a expectation of how fast its going to be. It may take time but if he has the hands to catch from Winston then its close enough to Cam that he can adjust.

That was one year too wasnt it? I dont know his full story in college. Thats quick adjusting for a guy who just popped on the scene at FSU.

He looks like one of those types that has game speed and doesnt run the 40 well. His strides are so long i dont see how he couldnt. I have short legs and ran 4.3 4.4 all day in track. And yes I still have track results to back in up. Anyway in game footage he always outruns everyone. The Brandon Marshall comparisons are what I think so far, cant wait to see him play! You can teach height, and thats what has me excited the most.

cam's passes hurt.   i can tell just from looking at them.  we had a kid in high school i couldn't catch because he threw it too hard.   never had that problem with anyone else.

fair nuff, but, at this level and what we're seeing so far, I feel like he's going to adapt.

And contrary to what many think: The Panthers will through deep, if their offensive line and receivers are legit.

Last year, their offensive line couldn't hold a 4 man pass rush, and/or their receivers many times couldn't get separation even when they did.

I guess you haven't seen/noticed him run (before and after the catch).

He's very fluid and shifty.

As a diehard FSU fan that can't stand Clempson I have say: slooooooow down, buddy.

Watkins is the real deal. Kelvin still needs a lot of work

Sent from my iPhone using Carolina

Watkins is not the real deal, yet. No rookie is the real deal, until they've proven it at the highest level of competition. Right now, KB and Watkins are the same. Unproven rookies who haven't even been to training camp yet.

    • Man that was awful.  Completely killed my NBA fandom in a way that will never recover. I loved that Hornets team.  The Bobcats were the worst possible replacement.
    • OK, so this is a bit weird.  When I coached at Salisbury High School when I first started teaching, I used to go over to Catawba College to watch film and talk football with their coaches.  They were great. Curtis, Jalon's father, I assume, was a LB at Catawba and hired as LB coach by Bennett When Coastal started their program, they hired Catawba's coach Bennett.  Bennett must have taken Jalen's father with him to Coastal. I am guessing that is about the time Jalon was born and why he was in Conway. So then his father comes back to Salisbury after Jalen is born and takes the head coaching job. Jalen is a good interview.  I love the kid based on this, and I have heard good things from former colleagues of FB.  Salibury (when I was there) was a very rough school.  Gangs, drugs, etc.  To put it in perspective, I was there for 2.5 years and I had four (4) students in my class (at different times) who committed murder during that time. A girl was raped in the gym by a few boys.  One night, after a game (there is a road between the coaches offices in the gym and the rest of the school) the coaches watched film until 1 AM or so.  When we were leaving to walk to our cars parked across that street, we noticed a car sitting in the middle of the road about 100 yards away with its lights off.  The driver took off when we neared the street, so we all hit the ground.  As the car passed, we heard about 6 or 7 gunshots.  The next day, the van behind where we fell to the ground had 2 bullet holes in it, about 5 feet above the ground.  All that to say this:  If the young man on the video endured anything like that, I want him to succeed and I found it interesting that he mentioned playing for the Panthers.  I am not sold on the player as a fit here based on our needs, but I am sold on the person.  Very proud of him for some reason that many may not understand.
    • First off, he's not even eligible for a contract yet.  You have to play three years. And thank goodness! All we saw last year were glimpses.  Yes, those glimpses were enough that I think every fan wants to see him come back next year.  But bottom line is that so far, with only a couple games worth of exceptions, he hasn't yet shown that he's a FRANCHISE QB.  He hasn't shown the consistent ability to elevate the players around him. He could be the guy.  After week two of this year, just saying that much is a massive, massive positive swing.  But let's see him put it together for 17 games.  Let's see him make the people around him BETTER.  Then we can talk about extending him. Let's not lose sight of the fact that thus far in his career, in no season has BY exceeded the rookie stats of MAC JONES. We should  be excited for the possibility, but we certainly haven't seen yet what we need to see to declare we have our guy.
