Free Agency Targets: Gordon Heyward

Recommended Posts

Big Al knows the deal.

We are in much better shape than Utah imo with players and money.

Agree. I think if we get a premier FA, it will be Hayward (knock on wood). Also think he'd be a better fit with us than any other top FA not named LeBron. I'd love to see us get him, even though he's a restricted free agent.

I'm not even a Lance Stephenson guy, but he's clearly a better fit than Hayward. He's a 6'6 SG who is actually a SG instead of a natural SF. He can score in a variety of ways, is tough, and physical, and the best defender of any of the names being tossed around for Charlotte.

I don't care who anyone "wants," but to say Hayward is a "better fit" than Stephenson is ridiculous.

And yes, I considered the "team chemistry" aspect before I wrote this.

Pretty sure he would mesh with Kemba.

Hayward is the better player. Hence why you never here Lance and max in the same sentence.

Hayward can play SG just fine. And at 6'8 would be a matchup problem for most if not all SG's.

He's a good player not a great player. He does have great skill and fundamentals offensively, but from what I've read about him is that he's a guy who doesn't want the ball in late game situations.  Sometimes he likes to blend in the clutch, when great players want the ball in their hands.   He's not a vocal leader. He's a glorified role player...he'd be a nice addition but not for max money.

That's what separates Lance from Gordon....swag.

This day in age you are gonna have to have 2-3 guys on max/near max money surrounded by good role players. Hayward would be a nice 2nd option in my opinion and a fugging great 3rd option. Especially with how fundamentally sound he is and his ability passing and rebounding.

There's a difference between max and near max.

I'd actually offer $12 mil over three years to get a deal done. Anything over that is playing with fire.

Sometimes you gotta take chances.

If you / FO think Hayward can average 18-20/5/5 while shooting good %'s than you sign him.

We could save our money and wait for a player that will never come.

We do not have that luxury imo.

ESPN has him listed as a shooting guard and out of the 48 players qualified in 'three point shooting percentage'... Hayward is ranked 47th.

ESPN is a tabloid agency. Reputable sources list him as a SF, which he is.

Stephenson is a better fit and comes at a lower price, but you'd prefer to overpay Hayward? Hmm...

Better fit?

GH is a better passer, shooter, bball IQ, and has a better midrange game.

Not even mentioning any locker room issues.

He is simply the better / superior player.

That's the conventional wisdom. Too bad it's horse poo. Hayward had better stats for the reasons I've detailed already. He's being offered more by teams because his stats/past production, which doesn't mean he's "the better player," and definitely doesn't mean he's the "better fit."
