This is an idiotic comment.

People who say thanks realize it's a privilege to live in the greatest country in the world not because they are scared to join the forces.

Newsflash... not everyone has the body type or passes the medical standards it takes to join the military. On top of that not everyone feels called to be a marine or naval officer. I guess those who don't want to be doctors are afraid of performing open heart surgery.

If you get a chance to travel in your adult life you'll find that statement is false.

SEALS are the Baddest of the Baddest.

This.

Back when I was in high school I witnessed that first hand. Saw a man get jumped by 4 guys twice his size at a rec center. In a split second he knocked 2 of them out cold, broke another's arm, and had the 4th in a choke hold squeaking like a stuck pig before 3 bystanders could finally separate them.

When he walked away his shirt was ripped and you could see a Trident tattoo'd on his bicep. He never even said a word. Just had stone eyes.

Scared the poo out of me.

I remember asking my father, who was a Marine & later retired from the Navy, what was the difference between a Marine & a Seal. He said "Well, say there's a target inside a heavily guarded building. A platoon of Marines would go in blazing and kill everyone. Whereas a small number of Seals will go in and either kill or capture the target and disappear into the night without being seen."

I don't know why, maybe because of my aging days, but tears swelled up in my eyes when I read this.

I was talking just yesterday with someone about things have changed since Vietnam.  It is so wonderful to see people appreciate what these young men and women face on a daily basis.  You don't know unless you've been there.  I was made to feel ashame for what I had volunteered to do.  I now have two Marine verterans, both combat veterans, and to see society accept them with open arms warms my heart about humanity.

WE are a great Nation.  We are not perfect but we are the GREATEST.  To all veterans know this;  I will stand arm in arm with you and fight to the bitter end so that all those that don't believe have the freedom to not believe.

Thanks, Jarhead.  That meant a lot to read this morning.

Could not have said it any better.

I started servicing a couple of years after the Vietnam war ended.   The GI bill was turned into a farce.  Sailors and Dogs keep off grass was the laughing joke in Norfolk Virginia.   It was so bad that the option of joining the services instead of going to jail was given to some people.    Post Vietnam was the lowest point for the services.

In 1980 things started to change when Reagan went into office and two F-14s shot down two Soviet Made SU-22s off Liyba.  The American pride started coming back.   Then in 1986 when a U.S. Soldier was killed in Germany and the USS America (attached to VA-34 onboard CV-63), USS Saratoga and USS Midway bombed Libya, to me was the turning point.   Once the first Iraq war started we were viewed in a much more positive light.

Those that think this is only for those that died... you're wrong.  Memorial Day is to remember those that died but those that lost a friend, a colleague, a fellow shipmate or army buddy.  Because it is like losing a brother or sister when you spend years with the same people.

You have your right to your opinion and when you express it..  Tip your hat to a Marine, Sailor, Airman or Soldier because they ENSURE you have that right.   Try it in another country.  You'll see a difference.  PROMISE.

A Seal is the most docile man you will ever meet until you piss him off.

I've actually had the chance to travel quite a bit and I still maintain that my statement is indeed 100% without a shadow of a doubt true.

You're looking at it from a a materilistic standpoint (i.e. debt, attractions, people).

The U.S. is the greatest country in the world because it's the land of opportunity where no matter where you grow up, there is always hope of a better lifestyle in part due to being a free country.

Last paragraph made me LOL. Don't worry, you'll grow up one day and understand how the world works.

You have know concept of high school and college athletics if you don't understand that last statement or maybe you just don't have the drive that some other individuals have and you're content with the life you're living.

I've had the opportunity to work with coaches at the college level and all of them have said the same thing... most players come from broken homes, quite a few are poverty stricken, but because this is America they have chance due to education requirements (which is a open facilitator to athletic competition)... and just maybe, just maybe... if they're good enough, they can make a name for themselves.

You'll understand one day how privileged you are to live in America and not fleeing Mexico because of drug lords or trying to get out of the middle east due to political unrest.

That is literally the stupidest analogy I've ever heard.

Being a supreme athlete with one in a million talents is called a privileged individual with an opportunity most individuals will never have. And no, most college athletes do not come from poverty. Living in government housing or a trailer and eating off food stamps is called being poor, but that isn't poverty. Living in a third world country with no clean water is poverty.

Who cares if athletes get special opportunities in America? That has nothing to do with making a "great" country. They funnel teenagers from 3rd world African countries everyday to play basketball. They funnel teenagers from Cuba, Venezuela, etc everyday to play baseball.

You're about as dense as it gets.

Agreed . They are taught to handle ANYTHING under pressure and not show it.

Most you would never even guess were SEALS

Only a trained eye.   When I was in Afghanistan I could pick them out.  Mostly because of the body build.  Thick thighs with swimmer shoulders. Seals have a unique muscle build and they usually have longer hair.
