Sam Mills is a Carolina Panther. By his own volition and admission, he is a Panther. He was the heart of this team from two different spots in two different decades. He was the inspirational fire and unintentional creator of our team motto, which hangs from every wall in the stadium to being stitched to our jersey's, and he is the driving inspirational force behind the identity the owner seeks out in the kinds of players he wants making up a roster. He has a statue sitting outside the stadium. He has his number retired (the only player to receive those honors.) He is a Carolina Panther, and he and his son who has now been a coach here through multiple regimes would tell you so.

I see you think emotionally rather than logically. That's ok. The more intelligent posters know what's up without you having to direct them.

Because people like Sam Mills and Jake Delhomme elevate their team with intangibles that don't show up on a stat sheet. There is a reason Sam Mills was only here for 3 years but remains the only statue. A list like yours based strictly on stats is fine, but total value to an organization can extend beyond that and intangibles are frequently considered in addition to stats.

Steve Buerlein isn't better than Jake either.

Jake: 59.2 completion percentage, 3.3 interception percentage, 82.6 QB rating

Beuerlein: 60.4 completion percentage, 2.9 interception percentage, 87.7 QB rating

For some perspective, If you want to just count Beurlein's full 3 starting years, his QB rating is 87.5. Not that much change. If you want to count Delhomme's full 4 years before injury, his QB rating is 84.7. His 2 full years after injury is 72.05. His rating jumped to 82.6 because of that year in which he got injured. A year that we would never know what would happen. We can only look at his previous seasons to see how it might have went. Even then and even including his over 100 rating that year, his rating wouldn't be better than Beurlein's. That's not ESPN's rating. It's the more accurate rating that's always been available. Also, I remember watching Beuerlein.

Then people are confusing 2 types of lists. "Best" is a relative term. You can include the things you mentioned in a list like that. An "All-Time" list is a list that is made according to stats. I don't do "Best of " lists because it is such a relative term and many people will have different views. All-Time lists have stats which doesn't leave much to argue with. I use stats and All-Pro selections. To me, that would make an "All-Time" list.

Statistics are dependent on circumstance. I look at the body of work and form an opinion. Jake helped the Panthers make the playoffs 3 times. Buerlein never led a team to the playoffs. Jake has an above .500 record as a starter. Buerlein was below .500. Jake had something that is difficult to track, the ability to win at the end of games. Sure he lost games too but you felt like you had a punchers chance with him.

 

And I loved watching Buerlein play. He was a good QB but Jake accomplished more.

I think Jake meant more to the team and probably had a better grasp on his position...

But if you're going off records, you have to remember how truly awful those teams in the late 90s were.

Give Steve our 2003 D-line and Stephen Davis, then imagine the carnage.
