Just started playing FPS's online....questions.

I am a little, OK maybe a lot older than the online gaming crowd, and yes I know that I am just starting something that people have been doing for years...but a question for you guys.

How on Earth are these players so fast on battlefield and modern warfare?

For the life of me, I can't figure out how they see me so quickly and I can barely aim before I'm shot to poo.

Helps.

I have a huge problem with FPS. Maybe because I've lived it but what helped was turning on the hardcore mode. Now those little adderall fueled brats can't use every trick in the game to see me coming. And I don't have to pump fifty fuging rounds into their head before they die.

This is why I stick to playing Transformers online. I have no experience of giant robots fighting.

they know the maps, know where to look, and are anticipating people being in those spots

avoid choke points and funnels, try to flank through areas and corridors that aren't popular

I think, that after reading this thread, that I don't have enough time to be "good" at these games.

It's more of a "hey I have an extra 30 minutes today, let's fire up a game" type thing.

Honestly, it's pretty frustrating, because it does seem kinda fun, but not when you are killing 2 and dying 10 times.

We should start a league for people who only rarely play. Or you could play pokemon x with me

Break the map down. Stick to a section of the map. Even if you're just cutting the map in half, know that half. Figure out entry and exit points. Figure out where your cover is.

The thing with FPS's is that you can't pinpoint any one thing as the reason you're not doing great. I've been playing FPS for a LONG time, and I still have the occasional 3-13 game. You have to know 1) the objective (like on Battlefield: are you playing conquest? rush? TDM? what's the objective of the game mode) and then play to that objective. Failure to play the objective can lead to needless deaths simply from being in the wrong spot at the wrong time because you deviated. 2) Know where your team is at in relation to where you are at. Look in the areas/directions they are not looking. 3) Know when to sprint and when to take your time moving. Even when you feel like you're in the clear, always assume a sniper is lining you up and don't stop moving until you feel confident that any sniper is simply unable to get a shot on you. Also, know that in close quarters areas, a few seconds longer to get through that hallway, round that corner, our just get from one end of the building to the other is better than sprinting across to an abrupt death because you didn't have time to stop and pull your weapon up.

Follow those 3 simple things, as well as sticking to certain sections of the map until you learn the map (if you're playing Battlefield 4, for example, I'd suggest playing Rush game mode, since it forces you into a smaller section of the map as part of the objective, so you'll learn the whole map), and you'll have more fun with it. FPS's can be a pain when you're just learning how to play. You don't have to be as balls to the walls as most players are. Take your time moving, and stop-aim-shoot until you get the hang of shooting on the move, and you'll be fine.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how they see me so quickly and I can barely aim before I'm shot to poo.

Helps.

A few things.

1) Some people run and gun and have quick aim/rapid fire/fast run with an SMG. If you come up to someone one on one loaded up with these perks you will lose on pure speed unless you have the same loadout.

2) Connections can make a difference

3) Call of duty MW/Ghosts are trying to be realistic and make sure you die with one or two bullets. So you have no reaction time when you get hit. Many of your deaths will be to someone you never see or due to an unlucky spawn.

4) Since run and gun can be so effective the only defense is to creep and camp around the map. Wait for people to come into your sites and rack up kills. So unless you are great and run and gun or happy to be a camper the gameplay might suck.

5) Some of the COD games allow for quick scope snipers which is a complete joke if you get a few good ones.

6) There are hackers.

These are generalizations but in general certain types of players can simply destroy a game by taking it over. I'm not one of these players

Suggestions

1) Instead of playing pure kill games play something like domination where there is more strategy

2) Or try the team based modes like Zombies or Extinction.

2) Play games where you don't get killed with one or two bullets. These also allow for more strategy. Titanfall isn't conducive to camping or run and gun. Team Fortress 2 is probably the best strategy FPS out there and is usually very balanced.

Good luck!

I'm in a similar boat, though my game of choice is Titanfall.

There is a LOT of speed in the modern games.  The hardest part for me is being able to aim while moving, or aim and adjust quickly  while sighting targets.  That's just a skill that takes time.

I've played some Halo 4 MP and older COD MP, and what it comes down to is the specific goal in a map/game.  Like if you're on a map with lots of wide open spaces, shotguns and SMGs are bad choices.  Long rifles are the way to go.  Camping on the perimeter of a map and taking your shoots there is a great bet to help get a feel for the game.  Conversely, a smaller map with lots of breaks makes SMGs and Shotguns a great choice, and long rifles a bad choice.

Lots of good suggestions here, and another one is to find the high ground.  It's always better to shoot down on someone, or drop a grenade on someone, or be able to fall behind them and melee them silently.  Though, yesterday, I did my fair share killing folks on rooftops so you'll get and you give in these games.

The most important suggestion is to have fun.  In titanfall, I really enjoy the hard point games.  I'm pretty decent at them because you get points for taking and defending them, which I do well with a shotgun and SMG.  The attrition (team deathmatch), I'm really terrible at because I am not so hot with the long weapons.  Though I did have some fun learning to use the sniper rifle.  Really, it just comes down to taking the constant deaths with a smile, and relishing when you are able to get that other dude.

Personal story of vindication:  Way back in the 1st modern warfare days, I was playing in a deathmatch, and I'd been getting repeatedly killed by a dude who was super high level.  In the last 7 seconds of the match, he was undefeated.  He taunted the rest of the players with his superiority.  He'd just gotten me, and I respawned close enough with my silenced pistol drawn, snuck up and killed him in the final count down, ruining his perfect game.  The insults, screams, and death threats were rather glorious. I loved it =)  I don't take it that seriously, it's just a game after all.

If it's fun, keep at it.  You'll get better.  If it's not fun, I can't stop recommending Titanfall =)

lightsout gave some great tips. Listen to the man. Also if you have the money invest in a headset. Sounds are clearer and you can hear footsteps to sound *****, makes a big difference. Also in BF4 if I was you I'd use the ACE 23. Great all around weapon.

I've been playing them for a while and still play the campaign on normal when I first get a game so that I can get a feel for it all seperate from learning multi player maps. It's also a good way to enjoy your spare half hour instead of getting owned the whole time online.

    • I know most of this place doesn't favor Bryce, so I'm preaching to the choir. Also - screw the Broncos and Peyton.   Okay, with that being said... Seeing what Nix has done this season is something we should all tune into.  Why?  His first two games were, well bad would be putting it lightly.  He looked in over his head, pro-level shocked, you could see the anxiousness.  He needed to settle down in the pocket and adjust to the game.  And you know what? He did just that.     And as the season has progressed, he has got better and better each week. All this through OL injuries and weapons like Sutton, Vele (who?), Lil'Jordan Humphrey (who?) & Mims, he has managed to ascend and bring himself into ROTY contention over Jayden Daniels & Brock Bowers.   And he's making advanced throws, layering in the second level, put them in position to beat KC the other week until the ST unit lost it. The short version of my point - Bryce's recent "progression" is relative.  This is the type of progression you would like to see as a season goes on and a kid gets adjusted to the pace of the NFL. Bo Nix Notable 2024 Stats (Through 11 games): 19 TDs (14 pass, 4 rush, 1 rec), 6 INTs, 2,275 pass yards, 295 rushing, 65.5% comp, 6.4 YPA Last 5 games: 10 TD, 1 INT, 1,193 pass yards, 115 rushing, 70.6% comp, 7.4 YPA
