G-man picked Gaffney because he's smart & tough (read Newton's latest)

Blitz pickup is great. But Running Backs need to run. Run for first downs, run for touchdowns. If he can do that, I will be very pleased. Blitz pickup has its place but Running Backs are defined by production.

In case you missed this part:

The 5-foot-11, 227-pound Gaffney also likes to hit as a runner. In Stanford's power rushing game that is similar to Carolina's, he rushed for 1,709 yard and 21 touchdowns on 330 carries last season.

Sure, it wasn't the SEC, but still.  And, before someone tries to make another comparison, we aren't talking about an arguably undersized back from Oregon.

It's just hard to take college numbers seriously. I would love for him to be established as a starter 4 years from now, you just have to wonder why he lasted so long if he's a gifted runner. For every great 6th round pick there are 30 guys that don't accomplish anything.

Well RB's in general have become undervalued recently.

You are right. 6th and 7th round picks should be forfeited since they are not likely to pan out. Just quit trying to pick players after round 4 or 5.

without blitz pickup, he'll never see the field. To be a third down back, he has to have blitz pickup.
