G-man picked Gaffney because he's smart & tough (read Newton's latest)

In some ways, you have to admire G-man for sticking to his creed.  Many of us, including myself, didn't quite understand how Dave Gettleman would draft a running back of all things in this year's draft, but it's kind of the same reason that he picked Kony Ealy (but, perhaps to a lesser degree).  G-man just couldn't pass up what he perceived as a great value---a good deal.

In David Newton's latest, I get the sense that Tyler Gaffney is going to be a Panther for a long time, and this belief stems from G-man's few words:

"Three hundred and thirty carries and he's as healthy as a horse," Gettleman said. "He just really fits. Again, the biggest problem with young running backs is with the blitz pickups. I was up in New York and Ahmad Bradshaw struggled with it. Brandon Jacobs struggled with it early.

"It takes time. This kid knows it now. He's smart."

Those few accolades speak volumes.

Of course the fact that Deangelo is in that RB-brick-wall territory and J-Stew may be on his last stand (amid a time when RBs have been devalued), as Newton mentioned, helps Gaffney's cause. But the fact that Gaffney is tough, smart, and already knows how to pick up the blitz pretty much makes him invaluable...at least that's what I glean from G-man's words.

And, you know, I can imagine that it's hard to turn down a smart and tough football player, particularly an RB that already knows how to pick up the blitz before he even steps on the field as a professional.

DeAngelo still sucks at blitz pickup.

i don't know why, but that reminded me of the time that J-Stew flipped that player who was blitzing.  I can't find that clip for the life of me.

Yeah I mentioned this in another thread when someone said that gaffney was not a lock to make the team. Gaffney is filling a specific need on this team. A healthy RB who can pick up blitzes.

Yep. We might as well shut the door and throw away the key.

That was awesome. Thought of it while reading as well.

I believe that Gaffney has value.  I don't know that he'll be an every down back because of his running style.  He runs kind of upright if you ask me, and he doesn't have a lot of shake and bake.  I think his playing time will largely be determined by our O-line--their ability to open up holes, and their ability to block for Cam.  Gaffney may become a great 3rd down, short yardage back.
