Dave Gettleman ESPN 730 Interview, Must Listen

Recommended Posts

It's nice to hear that they're high on B-Willy. We very well could be stacked at tight end with Olsen, Williams, and Dickson.

3 TE sets with KB!!

Olsen and Dickson on the line and Williams in the Slot with KB on the outside

I was very shocked when we traded up a bit for Bene - definitely want to see what he looks like out there.

By the way, never realized our duck hoarding habit. Whole lot of Ducks - good lord. Dickson, Stewart, Kenjon, Williams...am missing anymore?

Wonder if they will take a Duck next year.

Glad to hear B-Will might have more of an impact this year. Also interesting that DG considered J'Wuan James a higher prospect than Moses. I wonder if we considered him a 1st rounder as well. Obviously Miami thought he was to take him at 19.

The Brandon Williams stuff was good to read (Kendrick Panther's, and Panther 4 Life's synopsis).

Going by their summary, Gettleman didn't speak in flowery terms about every player he was questioned about (not that he was derogatory either. Just not immediately, and obviously optimistic). So that appears to be a good thing, especially with a practice player last year.

I thought he was pretty direct and forthcoming about the tackle situation. He made it clear they don't have a "Jordan Gross" right now. He explained the draft. Then he explained they couldn't afford a free agent tackle with the cap.

So you can see his logic, whether you agree or not. And the "sometimes the answer is on your roster" is clearer to me now. "The answer" doesn't mean a superstar that will lead us to glory. When you ask the question "what is in the best interest of the Panthers at tackle?" right now, saving cap space and going with a jag is the answer.

You don't have to agree with him, but you have to respect his train of thought. It's not like he's looking at our tackles and saying "these guys are great". He's saying "this is the best we can do, for now.".

Exactly what I was thinking, three huge targets that can block, but also go vertical.

Unless they've improved, none of those three are quality blockers. There's a reason Hartsock was the #2 TE last year, and it wasn't his pass-catching ability.

Yep.  I think he had a clear day-1 starter LT group in his mind and all of them were gone by 28.  The value was elsewhere.

After that, most guys were either RT eventual LTs, guard converts, or strictly RTs.  We've got a young Bell and Chandler who Dave obviously liked more than this draft class beyond the first rounders and he saw value elsewhere to be added.
