Manziel Not Impressing

stirs

Recommended Posts

To me Manziel acts just like a spoiled kid who has done whatever he wants his whole life. He has gotten by on talent, so he takes nothing seriously. That attitude may play with the kids. But the Powers that Be in the NFL are not happy.

I would hate to be a Front Office Exec with the Browns. The questions have to keep coming. Is he ever going to grow up and take this seriously? Will we ever be able to trust him? What kind of leader/example is he going to be/set?

Having fun is one thing. But this kid seems to go out of his way to play at every chance he gets. You don't need to have a 40 in your hands every time you put down the playbook. Just maybe you could, I don't know, study your playbook, and not go to Vegas at every opportunity.

Part of me believes he will never cut it because he has no drive. Other than wanting to party.

Part of me hopes he can figure it out and become a productive member of the Browns.

At this point. I have no clue which one he will become. But I am betting on the former, because he has shown very little desire to be the latter.

If he got arrested, and the media didn't report it, sure you could make that argument. But him going to a party in his off time? Come on...

I don't think it's the fact that he's doing it that bothers people, I think it's the WAY he's doing it that bothers everyone. The arrogance in the way in which he defends his actions. He doesn't seem to see the situation from other people's perspectives. He's so defiant in thinking that he is right, and everyone else is wrong. The "how dare they tell me how to live my life, I'm not changing for anyone" attitude rubs people the wrong way. You come off like you know everything and that you're better than everyone.

Instead of reflecting on himself, and seeing how the way he acts looks to others, he defies them and continues to do it and throw it in their face. Compare that with what Cam did where he took a step back, looked at himself in the mirror, and embraced the criticism that the media has thrown on him, and done everything he can to change their perspective of how he pouts and is a bad teammate.

I really don't care either way, I don't think he will do anything in the NFL personally, and that was before he was getting attention for all this crap.

I think Manziel will have that moment as a rookie that Cam did soon enough, that won't be until the real games are played though.

Right now he's in the media because he's an easy target and many writers are lazy as hell and can't come up with real stories.

Who gives a fug and why?

It's one thing to hold the kid to a certain standard as a collegiate player, but he's no longer in college, so who cares? He turned professional when he was drafted, the Cleveland Browns made the decision to draft him and pay him. Wake me up when/if he gets arrested or there suddenly appears a poo-ton of guns in his apartment.

Back in the days of Broadway Joe, you could probably get away with partying all the time if you were a superior talent.  As competitive as the league is today, I wouldn't put any bets on that bing possible anymore, but it would seem Manziel believes he can do just that.  My guess is he'll learn otherwise.

To tell you the truth though, I don't have much of an issue with guys wanting to have fun.  What I'd have a big issue with as a Browns fan though is the question of whether or not he actually cares about succeeding or only cares about being famous.  People who care about winning put in the work necessary to do so.  It's yet to be seen whether Manziel will do that or not.

My personal read: I think even if Manziel is the biggest bust in history, he really won't give a flying rip as long as he's having a good time.  Tha, in my opinion, is a whole lot worse thing than excessive partying.

You can be forgiven for being a party animal.  Forgiveness for letting your team down though?  That's a lot harder to come by.

This. Panthers fans have defended Cam vehemently from negative press and opinions but seem to be feasting on the same now that it's directed at Manziel.

I agree with you to an extent. However, Manziel is adding fuel to the fire with all of his week- end antics.

Ain't that the truth.

Ultimately, it will come down to how he performs on the field.  If he plays well, it'll just be Johnny being Johnny and no big deal.  If he struggles, he's going to be attacked mercilessly by the media.

Big difference between Newton and Manziel is perception vs reality.

Newton has one of those personalities that can rub some people the wrong way.  He's not a bad person or a jerk, but his demeanor can be easily misunderstood. (I think most people know someone like that, someone you understand but not everyone does).

Nobody misunderstands Manziel.  He is who he is.

I'm kinda with you, Mr. Scot.  The thing with Cam is that when he gets down, he shows it.  And that is what rubs people the wrong way.  Now with Manziel, he's cocky and brash.  And to be honest, I don't think he's all that great of a football player.  He runs around in circles then heaves the ball downfield to his 6'5" recievers that make a play for him.  Not to mention at this point he should be studying football 24/7 instead of partying with Bieber, Tyrese, and Floyd Mayweather.

I had a brother-in-law with a similar personality, and he wasn't under national media scrutiny.

Sometimes you have to look beyond just a surface impression to really get what somebody is all about.  National media types, casual fans and fans of other teams have no real motivation to do that.  That doesn't necessarily make them bad, just misinformed.

Heck, if you dug deep, Jay Cutler might actually be a great guy.  But who on this board gives a s--t?

Manziel?  He's the kind of player I've seen a dozen times be great in college and lousy in the pros.  Maybe he'll surprise me, but my expectations are low.
