Dave Gettleman on XM NFL Radio (link to audio)

DG is the man. Great interview and although Plax is an idiot, that's not how DG was comparing KB to, Plax was a stud on the field in his prime.

His comments on the salary cap was interesting though. I wonder if one of the RBs will get cut soon.

What I found most interesting was the discussion of the investigative process.

Gettleman talked about the chatter regarding Benjamin.  He'd certainly heard it, but chose to ger their own impression directly.

I don't think you can overstate just how huge an advantage that direct contact is when it comes to player evaluation.  As fans, all we have is what we can read online or see on video.  Personnel people have so many more options to learn the good (and the bad) about potential draftees.

I listened to a KB interview here in the bay area right before the draft because he had just visited the niners, and he said he texted Jameis Winston when he got busted for the crab legs and gave him hell because all the football players I guess are given crab legs like as a stipend.

Just thought it was funny and most here probably didn't get to hear it.

So much of what we get as fans is complete misinformation. The scouts, the coaches, the agents, nobody speaks honestly and openly leading up to the draft. The most honest thing I've heard was Gettleman talking about Odell Beckham. The rest of the information we get has an agenda attached to it.

After the draft Blake Bortles was the top QB on every bodies board. Before the draft all we heard about was Manziel.

can't listen. care to share what he said?

Sorry, I'm at work.  He was asked if he knew how bad the cap situation was when he took the job.  Some guy named Kevin told him that he had some challenges ahead of him.  He knew what he was getting himself into.  He says they're trying to get the cap under control and they've made progress.  Will be out of it sooner rather than later.

I have no idea who Kevin is.  I looked on panthers.com and can't find a Kevin.

It's a very short interview.  He also talks about KB.  Nothing new.

it was a very laid back, short interview where they just threw him a few softballs and didn't ask him much

they asked him about KB's work ethic concerns (I didn't realize he had any), and Gettleman said Proehl spent a day with him, had dinner with him, and did board work with him. And KB was one of the 30 we had in for a visit, Gettleman said he spent an hour with KB and from "his instincts," he had a good feeling with KB. Said with all the time between the combine and the draft, that the kids in the draft unfairly get racked through the coals, have their issues overblown and overscrutinized

they asked him who KB compared to, and asked if he compared to Brandon Marshall. Gettleman said he reminds him of a young Plaxico, said he needs refining like all the first round picks, that he thinks the guy the Giants got, Odell Beckham, was the best route runner of the first round picks. He said KB made some "O. M. G. catches" at rookie camp (remember from another thread, Gettleman almost had a heart attack when he saw KB come down with one of the catches)

they asked him about the cap situation, and he said we have a cap guy for that, and that he "does a really great job." He said his name, but I forget it

what they didn't ask was questions like:

who were the guy(s) you wanted to get in the 1st R? were you interested in trading up for anybody? were you interested in trading back for more picks at all? Was KB the guy you knew would be there at 28 and you wanted to take at 28 all along? were there any other players that you or your staff were considering at 28 besides KB? if KB hadn't been there, who would you have picked at 28? With the retirement of Gross, why didn't you take an OT with any of your draft picks? Did you like the guys on your roster better than any of the prospects? which OTs did you have graded the highest in the draft and what grades did you have on them, etc? What issues did you have with them? who are your projected starters on OL? do you hope to add any more OL when other teams start making there cuts? or adding one of the currently unsigned veteran free agent OTs out there? What is the plan with Kony Ealy? You have Hardy and CJ, two of the 3 highest paid DEs in football, do you have a plan for their future, or are you just playing it by ear? How do you feel the 2014 Panthers compare to the 2013 Panthers? How do you feel the new 2014 WRs compare to the WRs you had in 2013? what about the new guys in the secondary? how do you feel they compare to the 2013 secondary? etc

Rob Rodgers.he's held that position for a while now.
