For you people that are ok with Bell starting

As someone who was a two-year starter at left tackle in high school and was recruited to play offensive tackle at several FCS schools, I can tell you that playing left tackle is completely different from playing right tackle.

During the second half of my sophomore year, I made the position switch from tight end to right tackle and struggled in pass protection. I was beat inside more often that out and my coaches attributed this to lack of strength and dexterity of my left hand/arm.

The following summer, due to the graduation of the starting left tackle, I switched to the left side and in my first season at the position, I was an All-Conference and All-County tackle. During the recruiting process, most schools wanted me to play defensive end, but those who recruited me as an offensive lineman were specific about their intentions to keep me on the left side.

Playing on the right bookend felt unnatural to me; I was unable to get a good punch on defensive ends to prevent the inside rip and I was caught off balance by blitzers. On the left side, I was far more comfortable; I allowed two sacks in my first game at the position to another All-Conference player and only one for the remainder of my career.

Edited to specify that I was awarded Conference and County awards as a tackle, not a defensive end.

I dont expect ppl to b*tch and moan but I also don't expect ppl to try and paint some imaginary homer image that we are not FUGGED on the OL. That is the impression I get on the Huddle.

This is a serious problem that I think people are taking lightly.

@Khaki

Who would I have drafted? Hard to say for 100% certainty as I have not extensively compared and contrast OT prospects but I could assure you I would have drafted one of the following Cyrus, B. Turner, Moses, Bitonio, J. James, or Fleming.

I am amazed at the number of people that are ok / content with Bell starting period, much less starting at LT.

I just read this on another post and thought it deserved it's own thread.

Guys, Bell is a backup at BEST and in no way should be starting until he gets better.

Our OL is in a world of hurt right now. Question marks and concerns GALORE.

We better pray some teams cut loose some solid stop gap veterans.

Like most people have already said, we aren't content with Bell starting.  But i've said this in previous posts..Not every need can be filled in an offseason with someone who is considered the long-term solution.  No one was content last year going into the season with the DB's that were on the roster..Every DB we had was considered a "backup at best." They actually ended up playing pretty well, and we finished with the 6th best pass defense.  Even still, we weren't content with those people, and that's why we let them walk this offseason.. I'm sure a lot of GMs aren't content with most of the positions on their roster.

But thats ok because we can all be excited that we have a GM that has shown that he can find servicable players that can be stop-gaps.  Thats what we need if we want to have back to back winning seasons.

The Broncos lost their starting LT last year, and they still had a pretty good year.. Not to say we shouldn't be concerned or that we are in the same situation.. But it shows you can still have success, and the good teams still find ways to cover up weaknesses.

I personally am going to wait and see how everyone in the draft pans out then come back and make threads about who we should have drafted. I will also claim those were the players I wanted all along

The thing is , if Bell plays good, then the same people bitching won't man up and say "man I have no idea what I'm talking about most of the time".  They will either say:

Bell really improved in the off season

I really thought Bell had potential I just never saw him live up to it

I was never worried about Bell

Cam is so great he makes Bell at LT look competent.

If I have learned anything being a Panther fan it's this.  Usually it's whatever we think is good that ends up being the problem.

2011 . Going into Cam's rookie year everyone was fine the defense would play and the offense was going to struggle... What happened?  Offense was top 10 defense was bottom 10.

2012  . Cam is going to improve by leaps and bounds.  Offense will be unstoppable.  ... What happened Offense was very stoppable. Run game disappeared.

2013.  I think we had a either the 1 or 2nd toughest schedule before the season started.  Everyone was saying we have no one is secondary, our defense is doomed.  ....What  happened?  12-4 ,Top 3 defense.

The only thing I can count on is me being a fan.  Everything else who knows.

Whether I am content, upset, throwing a tantrum, nervous, anxious or hungry isn't going to change whether he plays LT, RT, or back up.

I am "amazed" and "astonished" that you think what we think matters.

I think the main issue is all the other moves that didn't lead to a quality left tackle decision.

14 million for a DE for 1 year

2nd round draft pick for another DE

5 WRs signed....0 Tackles?

+1 tight end

6th round on additional RB

So a quick run down reveals several moves made, none of them concerning what is potentially the 2nd most important position on the field.  It's not just about finding a starter or hoping a player will turn into a superstar, it's about depth and quality back ups as well.  Cam Newton is our franchise, I don't wanna see a repeat Joe Theisman.

Also left out the fact it's been obvious Gross would retire for 2 off seasons now.

it's not taking it lightly....it's hoping for the best and not freaking out in a panic over something they have no control over and that might possibly end up being a situation better than it currently looks because 1) we aren't working with all the info at their disposal and 2) we don't know who might either become available or rise up on our roster to fill the spot.

if you've paid attention at all, you will know that i am not at all happy with the OT situation nor have i been one who said they loved how the draft went, alhough i am loving that we drafted benjamin and turner and i understand that ealy and gaffney gives us options when dealing with hardy/johnson and williams/stewart.

I've been around long enough to know that you are and have been overreacting because the draft went so different from the direction that you, in all your studying of prospects leading up to the draft, decided what was best for the team. guess what....we all get it right every once in a while, but more often than not we get it wrong and it's a crapshoot telling what makes the difference between us getting it right and wrong.

you've got to come to grips with this idea that maybe...just maybe...it's not as bad as you think and/or will all work out and just let go. that doesn't mean not complaining about thingswe don't like, but it does mean just relax a little and don't let it consume you because if you don't it's going to keep you from really enjoying the build up for the season tha we all should have and it will also make you look like a whiny bitch. speaking of which, my puppy is whining at the door and needs to go for a walk. that might be something you need to do as well and get some fresh air.

Could the OP hurry up and give a shotgun a blowjob so that we don't have to suffer from him bitching every 5min about us not drafting an OT?
