WFNZ update

WFNZ is in an interesting place and they really need to hit a home run. Their product isn't that strong IMHO. They're just lucky to be in a small market and there isn't any real competition. The local programming on ESPN730 is horrible.

Garcia, despite being the typical bandwagon dookie, is someone I'd love to grab a beer with. But he isn't that great on the radio. Talks a lot with out saying much.

Frank is a good guy. I've played cards and watched some games with him. I think his show's pretty good, although I think sometimes he intentionally takes a stance opposite of the fans just to create the drama. Guess that's what he's supposed to do.

Yeah, like when he preached how we should trade our whole draft to move up for Sammy Watkins.

Yeah I like him, but if I were programming director I'd want him to be a co-host..kinda like Will Ferrell. He needs to be the "supporting actor" not the lead role. And like I said he is the typical bandwagon dookie and come college basketball season WFNZ is basically not listenable as it turns into a UNC hate-a-thon.

Thats why Im surprised Espn hasnt stepped up or anything. I honestly like listening to Rosinki and 730 in the afternoon after I'm leaving work, but outside of that and Mike and Mike there isnt much there. Hell they play telemarketing crap on sunday and Saturday mornings.

WFNZ has an opportunity to be able to broadcast good local sports but just has what? 3 shows through the whole week M-F. Im surprised neither Espn or anyone else has increased the presence of local sports radio

I like Bobby Rosinski pretty well.

Bill Rosinski is actually a pretty good radio guy, but his seeming underlying bitterness toward the Panthers messes it up.

I totally agree with you on the 730 thing. It's kinda embarrassing. They've got an opportunity to really grab hold of the market because a lot of people in their target demo (like u and I) want to tune out of WFNZ but there's really no other option for local programming. ESPN730 is horrible and there's no reason to listen. Bobby Rosinski sucks and only got that job because his daddy prob pulled some strings. I saw they brought on Al Gardner but most people under the age of 40 in this area don't know who he is unless you work in the industry.

Colin would be a great co-host on any one of these shows, but I agree that he doesn't have the voice to carry a show on his own or as the lead.  He gets a little tripped up over his words sometimes and just doesn't quite seem natural going into and out of interviews or doing on-air reads.  Still, he has good insight, so he would work well with someone else as the lead.

I feel kinda the same way about Garcia.  He still gets tripped up from time to time, and I really think he would work better as someone's sidekick as well, but I guess it's too late for that now.  I liked Yarboro on the Morning Sports Page way back when, but he and Garcia are not a good match, IMO.  Frank doesn't ever get his sarcasm, so it's just painful hearing the two of them interact sometimes.  I feel like we're getting a watered-down version of both of them right now because of their lack of chemistry.

The Mac Attack is still by far my favorite show on there, and it's mainly because of Celania, although I enjoy Mac, Colin, and T-Bone too.  They have a good chemistry and all add something to the mix.

I actually enjoy Bobby Rosinski and Chris Allison on 730 from time to time as a change of pace, but there's no way I could only listen to them because they just don't carry the same weight at WFNZ.  They don't get the same caliber of guests, aside from a few ESPN guys.  I started listening to them more when Marc James went solo, but I still prefer to listen to them when WFNZ is on a commercial break.

You apparently never listened to Marc James.

no, I listened quite a bit because its sports radio and they talked about our sports teams. Now that both Taylor and Marc are gone, I have tried listening and I now entertained or interested in anything they put on the air.

For the record, I live outside of Burlington and don't listen to sports talk unless I'm in the car, so not much. So listening to something, anything panthers, hornets, NCAA related, etc. is better than the national stuff like espn radio which rarely ever has anything to say about this area.

Let me clarify: I am sure that the new content on the Drive is good, if not better. I haven't listened much the last two weeks. But when you turn on the radio and hear Jeff Reid (spelling?) talking crap about the Panthers fan base and talking about the steelers, kinda turned me off.
