Football Gameplan's 2014 NFL Draft Grades - Panthers

Actually, I would've preferred another WR instead of a RB. Do you think RB & OG was more of a need than OT & 2 WRs? And my 'little closed box of a world' I actually think Kugbila could be what you needed at guard more so than spending a 3rd on Turner. 'My little closed box of a world' would allow me to at least give the guy that was drafted last year in the 4th round a chance to prove it on the field…but I guess that's just small time thinking.

Because you can't control what happens on draft day and just because I would've 'preferred' other targets than Benjamin, like I mentioned in the piece, I can't be upset if he was 'their guy' and they wanted him. Also, it would be unfair to grade a team based of 'my rankings' as opposed to the player they drafted & how he'll fit. My grades are talent based and my personal opinion on the prospects. Sure some guys are 'reaches' so to speak but that's not reflected in how I evaluate the team's draft. So even if I had Benjamin as my 16th best receiver…I know that teams had him in their Top 10; For grading purposes, I have to look at it more from a 'how the player's talents fit' perspective.

I think Turner was a great pick even in Kugbila ends up being a good player if only because quality depth never hurts. Look at what happened with Carolina's guards last year... can't always count on there being a Wharton, Scott, and competent UDFA DT-turned-OT-turned OG being available. In fact, considering that Fua was practicing at OG at one point it's still pretty amazing that the line turned out as servicable, if not decent, as it did.

@ FootballCzar    - Appreciate it as always.  Even if I don't agree at least you do research and have valid justifications on why you feel that way.  Keep up the good work.

That being said, it's obvious the Panthers FO feels like we have a lot of answers already on the roster.  It's going to be interesting on who is right or wrong down the road.

In your little closed box of a world, you have no idea as to the health and progress of Kugbila.  Guess who *does* have close and intimate knowledge of Kugbila's health and progress?

And, yeah, you finally admitted the word that I said was your key philosophy from the beginning but you wanted to deny... NEED.

Again, you would draft for need and put together a Hurney quality team for your efforts.

Gettleman is drafting to build a talented team and and a long-term winner, not to fill fan-determined holes.  The fact that he's smarter than you is that he only spent a 3rd round pick on an almost sure starter on the interior line whereas you would rather roll the dice on last years injured unknown and use that pick on a WR no better than a Jason Avant or Tiquan Underwood.  So a strong physical OL starter?  Or a #3 WR?

The GM inside of you would have taken the WR?  LOL

What our front office wants is our defense giving the  offense the ball so much they can't help but put up some points!!!!  We have the line for a running game and in the old days it was run to pass.

Don't see how grades mean much, they more useless than the stats they keep.  We got taller and based on our QB play we should get A+ for doing so!!!

If bad grades mean they think we gonna lose more I personally believe they B Wrong!!!

From the outside looking in, I have to admit I'd like our draft on paper much better is we took Moses over Ealy. However, if Ealy was ranked in the 20's and Moses in the 40's,50's or 60's, who am I to argue about improving the talent level. Gman did what he said he'd do prior to the draft. He wouldn't be afraid to pass on a top pass rusher if one fell, and one did.

I'm just awefully worried about our T spots, I'm not worried whether Kony will bust or not like past 2nd rounders we chose under Marty.

More like Football Lameplan....pops collar.

Seriously though I thought drafting Boston combined with trading up for Bene was where the draft fell flat in my couch GM opinion.

I thought if the Panthers were willing to get aggressive and move up that the 4th round was the round to do it. The fourth was loaded with secondary talent in the top 22 picks apparently. I wanted the Panthers to get anyone from the lot of Cb Keith McGill, CB Pieere Desir or WR Abberderis. There seemed to be a lot of value there.

Also I am just not familiar with Bene at all. I did think not drafting a potentially good OT like Hurst was questionable but he must have serious medical red flags bc no one drafted him.
