with ginn gone who is our new kr/pr guy?

A RB's ability in pass protection is vital to the amount of time they get on the field.

It helps but its not the most valued asset to have. plent of rbs cant block for crab but see plenty of time. and my point was you have to have more than being a decent blitz pick up guy to make the team.

When the hell did the Panthers get Noel Divine?

Yes a rookie who didn't show much in college either which is why he went in the 6th round and likely undrafted if we didn't take him.

...umm...Barner and Gaffney were very productive in college.

Well 1,700 yards rushing and 21 TD's in a season is nothing to sniff at. If you want to be in there on 3rd downs you better be able to block for your QB. DeAngelo noted it as a big reason why he didn't get on the field more as a rookie, his pass blocking was sub par.

Gaffney came from a power running team running a pro offense. I think they saw more in him than his ability to pick up blitzes but its obviously an asset they'd rather him have than not. I think there was a reason Gman specifically mentioned it.

With the kickoff rules the way they are these days, it's not really that important anymore.

Not true at all, having good special teams play took an average offense to the super bowl many a times.

Every yard counts, and the threat of a guy who can take it all the way at any moment is beneficial beyond even if he touches the ball or not.

I wrote in another thread with PFR stats that Ginn was actually very middle of the pack for us on returns. So long as the next guy doesn't fumble, I really don't care about explosiveness, because the differential in field position from the decent return guys and the mediocre return guys wasn't all that great when I looked it up.

I get what you are saying, yards wise. But man, to me, there is nothing like having a legit threat back there. Especially on PR. When you have a scary cat back there teams do some pretty silly things trying to keep the ball out of his hands. And sometimes those silly things backfire.

So to me, ball security is important, but having a guy that can do some actual damage helps.

And to micnificent28. If you can't block, you ain't seeing the field. You become a liability if you can't hold up back there. I read an article last year where Tolbert helped Barner out a lot with this. So yeah, it be important.
