Mike Tanier's Panthers Draft Grade

compare what he had to say about the Bucs and Falcons:

"while the Falcons rebuild and Panthers shoot themselves in the foot... (WR Mike) Evans, (WR Robert Herron) and (TE) Seferian-Jenkins join a new-look (Tampa) offense that..could make the Bucs instantly competitive again... Mike Evans and Austin Seferian-Jenkins are not just great, high-upside prospects, but players who will shape the Buccaneers offense... Robert Herron was a great sixth-round value at wide receiver. He provides great pure speed..an excellent low-price acquisition ... The (Bucs) were so active in free agency that there was not much to accomplish in the draft. ... Lovie Smith handled much of his overhaul via free agency, and he did not have much work to do on a defense loaded with young talent.

...

(the Failcons) were able to target very good players to solve specific problems...Adding seven defenders sent a message that none of the kids who became default-choice starters last year can rest easy... The Falcons splurged with a 20-free-agent spree after the draft... Factor in all of last year's rookies, and the Falcons have a full-scale rebuild going on... the Falcons will not get good again overnight. By doing some dirty work this year, they can be ready to attack again when Ryan is still in his prime and Drew Brees is in a broadcast booth.

...

Remember how the Falcons selected 20 rookie free agents in the last segment? The Panthers signed nine as of Tuesday, when all the best ones were taken. Nine. Two of them were wide receivers, one was a defensive back. ... You know how great teams keep their rosters strong by fostering competition -- "steel sharpens steel," and all that? The Panthers don't seem to grasp that concept."

and our beat writer for ESPN, David Newton, wrote: "Nine undrafted rookies and no tackle..Panthers added nine undrafted free agents..and none were offensive tackles. So between the six players selected in the draft and the nine undrafted pickups, the Panthers didn't get one player at the left tackle position that was considered a primary need."

It's not that he didn't re-sign all of them. It's that he didn't re-sign ANY of them.

'

That is because outside of Smitty (who is still a decent WR), the rest of them SUCKED.

LaFell NEVER even became a food #2.

Ginn was a deep threat who dropped more balls deep than he caught.

Hixon was non-existent in the offense.

KB/Cotchery/Avant/Underwood > Smitty/LAFell/Ginn/Hixon

They wanted us to take an OT just so they could say that we took one.

Outside the Top 4 OT's (Robinson/Matthews/Lewan/Martin) the rest in the draft were underwhelming and NOT an upgrade over even what we have.

Which of those that have left are better than the ones who have replaced them?

I'll make a list:

Steve Smith

Jordan Gross

That's it. All the others that were "let" leave have been filled by adequate replacements. And if you're of the opinion (like me) that Kelvin Benjamin can probably attain 745 receiving yards and 4 TD reception this season, the list shrinks down to this:

Jordan Gross

That's it.

I love how people cite 12-4 as if that was supposed to happen last season.

We're not making a championship run. We're building a franchise that can finally put together back-to-back winning seasons.

Worried about WRs? Crotchery is an upgrade over Hixon, Avant is an upgrade over LaFell, and Underwood is being given the same opportunity as Ginn to break out

Agree that 12-4 might have been a little ahead of schedule

We got praised (with an A- grade) by some talking heads and slammed by others. Just goes to show that none of 'em know what they're talking about. They're just guessing.

yep, the author even admitted that: "I have been writing glowing Bills draft roundups -- and depressing Bills season roundups -- for half my adult life. ... The Bills could find 6-10 yet again, (but) this does not look like a 6-10 roster or coaching staff."

Tanier is at least as good as Barnwell on grantland and helped develop DVOA on football outsiders. I know Draft grades don't mean anything, but I actually put more stock in his opinion than anyone over at ESPN. I don't think we'll be 5-11 though...

As we all know, draft grades this early are silly, and only serve to push website hits.

Instead, what I find so interesting is that everyone in the NFL-media thinks they know better than a GM.  While opinions are free, I think before we all get in a tizzy, remember that these folks are not NFL front office personnel.  Sure, a lot of them have NFL experience in one way or another, but the fact that they are employed in the media means something...

Let's give Gettleman another two full seasons before we start making judgments.
