Steve Kerr spurns Jackson/Knicks Takes Warriors Job

In a shocking turn of events, Steve Kerr has decided to take the job as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors leaving the New York Knicks wondering, "what went wrong."

 

The Knicks were shoe-in's in the race for Kerr as GSW had already started looking at other candidates (Lionel Hollins), but apparently Kerr and the Knicks couldn't agree on the length of the contract.

 

So with out further ado, here is the coach of the Golden State Stephen Curry's...

Can't really blame Kerr for taking that job over the Knicks.  Just look at the rosters.

I will say, after letting Mark Jackson go, I find it a little questionable that Golden State would take a chance on another first time head coach.

Doesn't matter how long his contract is unless it's guaranteed money. Think Kerr will regret is decision within a year or two.

Maybe he felt coaching for the Knicks he would just be Jackson's puppet. Whoever the Knicks next coach is I really think it will be one of Jackson's former players. Only people with extensive Triangle Offense experience should apply.

Why?  Even with Lee, Curry and Igoudala still on the books, the Warriors will be about $10-12 million under the cap going in to the off season and the Knicks, assuming Anthony doesn't exercise his ETO, are $30 million over.  Even if Anthony does exercise his ETO, they'll still be over the cap and stuck with Stoudemire, Chandler, Bargnoni, and Felton.

The Knicks situation is a long-term rebuilding project, not a great place for a first time head coach to land.

That front office is clearly of the mindset that they need to win playoff series and do it now and didn't feel like Jackson was the coach to do it for them.  That's why I questioned the Kerr hire in the first place.  It doesn't make a ton of sense to go with another rookie head coach when it appears that the team just needed a little more polish on top of what Jackson accomplished.

 

From Kerr's perspective though, it's really a no brainer.  If you take the Knicks job, you're only there because you're Phil's guy and the media questions when Phil is going to come down out of the front office and take the reigns from you if you're struggling, which, no doubt, will happen next year because that team is terrible.  In Golden State, he has a chance to take over a very talented roster and put the finishing touches on a championship caliber team.

I guess all NBA announcers are the most qualified people for coaches. Guess with them pointing out how your doing everything wrong night in and night out owners have wised up that these are the best individuals for the job. Hehe

Look at the current list of NBA head coaches.  More than a third of them were former players and most of them were guards.  That's the direction teams seem to be going with their hirings.

I don't blame him, I like the Dubs situation much better than the mess that is the Knicks.

I suppose the Lakers will eventually pursue hometown guy Reggie Miller. I doubt the Knicks would ever want him...cough*spike lee*cough

There is a report coming out that fellow broadcaster Marv Albert told Steve Kerr to stay away from New York because he'll never be happy. Albert said he told Kerr to look at the recent history of the Knicks... no success.
