The 49ers WR corps may tip scales in their favor

I think we hate him more for his douchey "I'm the man I'm the man I'm the man" persona, when he was just carrying Alex's clipboard around 3 years ago. Also, everyone sweats his nuts for being so amazing, when in reality his surrounding cast is amazing, and he does just enough to capitalize on it. As previously mentioned, he is the weak link holding that team back, but seems like he gets a lot of the credit, as if put the team on his back and carried them through their successful seasons. Drop Cam in the same all star line up and he would easily be just as, if not more, successful than Kap. If Gabbert gets a chance to come in and play and blows every one away with his "progress", it will even further make us question whether Kap is any good, or if it was the system he landed up in.

Alright heres the deal. People think anybody can do it because Alex got us to the nfccg, but Alex had it so easy. He had our 6-10 schedule from our awful 2010 season. The nfc west was still a joke and that was the best our D ever played. They were something else in 2011. All he had to do was sneak by the saints behind our defenses 5 turnovers and what do you know you're in the nfccg. In 2012 Kap did it on his own. He win in NE while our D gave up 31. Beat the pack while giving up 31. Won in atl after giving up 28 and being down 17-0 within the first 2 drives. Damn near won the SB but i dont think any teams won the SB giving up 34 points. So yeah Kap gets credit because he deserves it. As much as everyone wants to point to the defense they really fell apart in 2012 and Kap carried us.

Kap did it all on his own in 2012? How exactly did he do it all on his own? He didn't take over for Alex Smith until week 10, getting his first start in week 11. I guess he was calling all the plays for Alex for the first half of the season?

Yep. Kap is definitely not as bad as most on here make him out to be, and just like most young/new QBs, he's going to get better with time.

49er fans fuel my hate of Kaepernick. I also can't stand looking at his bird face mumbling in interviews on TV but that is a personal issue that I take full responsibility for. Dude has the charisma of Bob Dole.

The defense was playing great when Alex was in. They fell apart when justin smith went own and aldon tore his labrum. And Alex wouldnt have been able to compensate. Not to mention Kap faced the tougher part of our schedule that year.

So wait, you're implying that your previous "franchise" QB, prior to the arrival of the demigod, Kap, was incapable? The same one who led you to the NFC championship game the previous year, and led the 2-14 Chiefs to a 9-0 start and playoff appearance the year after?

So the team was carrying Alex Smith, until his concussion when Kap took over and carried the team for the next season and a half? Awesome logic you have there, guy.

You obviously haven't read the other posts. Wasnt Alex's #1 receiver a RB? Lol. Did he play one good defense? No. He woud not have survived this years schedule and lack of weapons. He wouldnt have survived 2012 when the defense broke down. He wouldnt have came close in seattle with gore gaining 14 yds. Was crabtree ever anything with Smith?

It has always been my contention that if Smith was your QB, then the 9ers would have another SB ring right now.  Smith has developed into a professional QB. In some ways, Kaepernick looks like a collegian: one read and run.

Smith has never performed well against good defenses. He played a cake schedule with an incredible defense in 2011. Played a 2-14 schedule and did not play one defense even close to the levels Kap was playing and had a mvp running back he was safely dumping the ball off to every other throw. KC has talent they just had complete garbage at qb the year before. Plug in a safe qb and the easiest defenses iv ever seen on a schedule and its not hard to believe they improved. Thats all smith hes safe hes not a playmaker and it just doesnt cut it against good defenses. Wait till he faces this years schedule hes going to look really bad.

I think that there is a little "hate" underneath the surface in your post.  In the game against the Colts, Smith was the play maker (and thet's not the first time I've seen him make plays), and this is with Bowe as arguably his only real WR and JC out. The loss wasn't on him. He did enough to win.

From the worst team in football to the playoffs in a year's time is more than about playing "easy" defenses, but even still, the Chiefs faced four of the league's top 10 defenses last year during their nine game win streak.

You can play down Smith all you like. I kind of expect that from a 49er fan given the situation. Whatever it takes to make you feel better.  The fact is, is that the top tier QBs would have won it all if they had what Kaepernick had at his disposal later in the year, and the same can be said for several second tier QBs (Smith and Cam included).  Kaepernick was the sole reason y'all lost to the Seahawks, and if he shows the same lack of progression this year that he displayed last year, he will be your undoing again, notwithstanding an even stronger arsenal.

You realize Kap went one deep right? Other than Boldin who did he have? Kyle Williams was his #2 and Marlon Moore his #3 to start the season. Sorry but Cams group was better. Yes Boldin is a beast but hes no longer a #1 and he hasnt been for years. He had a nice run in the playoffs with flacco but this was his first 1000 yd season since warner and he did it with Kap. The guy is no where near quick enough to get consistent seperation from the better corners and while he's good at catching the 50/50 ball, you dont wanna try that all game. And no the first game in SF is not an example. We win that game if Vernon stays in. We were up 9-0 when he left. He left then Kap looked like garbage because he only had Boldin who isnt quick enough to beat double coverage. He made one read because there literally was only one read that he trusted most the season. Did he go one read when we had moss walker crab and vernon? No. And he wont this year now that he has competent targets again.

Fair enough. Boldin is better than Smitty at this point though. The one read and run is something Harbaugh and Roman encourage at least sometimes. You don't know if you win that game if Vernon stays in. What if Cam doesn't throw an interception that game. Very well could have been 13-6. You lost the NFC championship because of Kap and you had Crabtree, Boldin and VD in that game. He made his plays but he also made his bonehead plays. LOB Is a hell of a secondary though. I'm not saying Kap is bad but he does have to get better if your going to make it out of the NFC now. Seattle stopped Gore and forced Kap to beat them. He didn't. I'll bet ya Cam out gains Kap throwing this year even with all your weapons.
