Anxiety and panic in kids

Well the medicine has been a Godsend. Fixed the problem and zero side effects. It is pretty amazing.

Wow that's amazing glad to hear. I had a similar anxiety growing up. Being that I have older parents for my age I use to dread going to school as a boy. I had an irrational fear of my mother dying every time she left for work, etc. I eventually over came that. School started to become an enjoyable thing and I just gradually grew out of that.

What was it that worked in the end, if you don't mind me asking. Great to see that it got better.

I've dealt with anxiety my whole life too, and even now at 20, I have some really strange tendencies that relate back to anxiety. Reading through this just made my hands sweaty, realizing what your son is going through and how painstaking it can be. Only alcohol has ever stopped it for me, which is obviously not a great thing.

Based on your post date he's been on this medicine for about a month, maybe a little less. It takes two weeks for the medicine to build up and level off in most cases. Side affects can take months or years to form.

Things to watch for is sleep issues and weight gain. Some medicines kill appetite, others greatly increase it. Most children don't have to worry about weight, it's more of an adult concern. Medicines can also alter sleep patterns.

So just keep an eye out for any behavior that is abnormal for your family. If you guys are early risers and your son starts sleeping until 11am or sleeping in school. It could be side affects.

At the same time don't assume the medicine is responsible for normal child misbehavior.

Great news.

Hey just wanted to mention to look into the side effects and how difficult it is to get off of the meds. I have anxiety pills and only take them once in a blue moon when it's really bad because getting off of them is hell.

not related to you OP specifically, but I wish it was the social norm for everyone to see a counselor or psychologist. so many people have issues they repress and won't seek help

glad your son is doing better

This

I just don't get it, so many people I know who constantly deal with the same problems that really impact their lives and they wont go to a therapist.

I imagine it's a pride thing for most. It's hard for many people to admit that they have weaknesses and there are things they can't tackle in life by themselves.

Not to mention the cost of therapy can be very expensive. Even with insurance most deductibles for mental health run $50 a visit. That's not easy for some middle class families to pay out 3-4 times a month especially when many think it isn't something they necessarily need.

If you are on any kind of assistance and can't afford the higher prices therapists, have fun getting an appointment in the next 3 months.

The mental health system is seriously screwed up more than the people that need the help.  .

They were talking about that on NPR. People do everything they can to delude themselves of their weaknesses.

I'm fuged up in all kinds of ways, I have no problem admitting that, of course it took months of therapy to realize how fuged up I was :)  and about 6k. But had I not gone, my life would be so much worst.

so good post JR

Yeah we looked into everything extensively and this was a last resort.

The doctor wants this to be a 9 month to a year process and then be done. We will see.
