Paging Brooklyn Bully (NYC questions)

Just got hired at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the summer and now I need to find a place to live within the next couple weeks...they gave me very little time to make this happen. 

 

I only need one bed, one bathroom, and would prefer to have a designated parking space and a gym in the complex. A studio or 1 bedroom apartment work for me and because of the amenities I would like, I am assuming a luxury high rise apartment would be the best way to go. Ideally I would like to be able to walk to the Barclays Center but I am not opposed to a 5-15 minute subway or train ride. 

 

My budget is probably around $3,250 a month but the main issue is finding a building that will lease me a room just for the summer months at that price. I can't get into a longer lease than that.

 

What are my options? What neighborhoods should I avoid? I know the Barclays Center is located in Prospect Heights but are the surrounding neighborhoods close enough that I would be able to get there pretty quickly?

 

Anyone else with knowledge of NYC, feel free to chime and help me out if you can.

Craigslist is your best bet. Prob not gonna find too many complexes in bk that arent DOSS. You should try looking into westchester county, you can take the train right into the city for a few bucks a day and spend a LOT less on rent.

Your budget is fine, but yes, the time table you'll present to them is going to be an issue. If you like, I can post on my building's FB group page to ask if anyone is subletting. That's what you'll need to do, sublet someone's apartment for the summer months. As for me, I pay $2750 a month for a one bedroom. It has a washer/dryer in it which is like pure gold in this city, good HVAC, comes with a free gym in the building, a pool, a beautiful roof deck, and a concierge. It's called BKLYN Gold. Others near me (luxury high rises) are The Oro, The Avalon, The Brooklyner, and The Toren. This is all in/around Fort Green and Downtown BK and of course there are many more buildings to choose from. I suggest you check those out to start, and ask them about subletters. Maybe even see if those buildings have FB group pages. All of those I mentioned are walkable to the arena (which to a New Yorker, a 15-20 min walk is like a 5 min ride in a car). And all are near the subway which takes you right to the doorstep of the arena.

 

Other neighborhoods close to you will be: Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Vinegar Hill, Boerum Hill and Clinton Hill. All are safe. In fact, NYC is the safest big city in the United States. The only parts of BK you want to avoid are East New York (a neighborhood IN Brooklyn), Brownsville, Sunset Park, and parts of Bed Stuy and Bushwick. But those aren't close to the arena anyway. 

 

You might also want to try Williamsburg (hipsterland). The G train will get you to arena with just slight line switching.

 

Your biggest issue will be the car. My advice is to leave it in Maine. My building has a garage (there are next to no parking lots in nyc) but it costs a butt load to park there for the month, as will any building. There IS street parking but it's first come first serve. I've been here almost three years and have yet to need a car once. It's a walking/subway city in BK, a subway/walking/cab city in "the city" (what we call Manhattan), and well ... there's always the bus. You don't need a car, man.

Awesome man that's all really helpful. Another issue is finding a place furnished... which would definitely mean subletting from someone is the way to go. Ideally I'd like to be moved in by June 1st and out of there by later August. It would be just my girlfriend and I who are two young professionals just working in the area.

I was debating on bringing my car to begin with so I don't think I will anymore. I'll likely just drive it down with someone, unload it, and then they could drive it back to Maine for me. I'd like to be at the most a half hour walk from the Arena.

I guess I just need to scour craigslist and/or contact all those high rise apartment places and see if they can offer a 3 month lease and then I'll find a company that can furnish the place for me.

You'll get it done. I was just in grad school and everyone was like 21-29 years old. A good chunk came here just for the two-year program, but others came for just one semester (10 weeks), many of which came from Germany, Sweden, Russia, Spain, Brazil, and India. All of these people were able to score a place to stay for their duration.

As short of a time as you'll be there I wouldn't even really worry about furnishing in the apartment. 

 

It's crazy how high that rent is! I know a lot of people moving to the West Coast making 6 figures but the high rent can be crippling.

Rent is definitely high, but you make more money up here and in my opinion it's worth it too. Ten pro sports teams to choose frm, some of the best restaurants in the world, beaches, lakes, two rivers, more cuture in one city block than some city's have in total, Broadway, off-Broadway, off-off-Broadway lol, museums, parks, delis and bakeries on every corner, shopping, events every damn night, hot hot hot women, bars galore, great weather, etc. You get what you pay for. I mean ... heck, I could live like a king in a place like Bishopville, SC but would want to off myself after just one night there.

 

Thankfully without a car/car payment/weekly gas/car insurance, it helps a TAD ... but yeah, man, the rent be nutty nuts up here.

I will be in a one-bedroom apartment in Avalon Forte Green... the rent is around $2900 a month but I really just wanted to be within walking distance of the Barclays Center so I could walk to work each day. 

 

Hope to be moving in on June 1st and starting at the Barclays Center that week. Right now I am just waiting for the woman to send me the necessary paperwork so I can be identified as who I say I am for the leasing office and take care of the security deposit and first month's rent.
