(repost from the other Drake Nevis thread...)

This is a very good signing. We have a need at DT. Our 2-deep at DT is: Star Lotulelei, Kawann Short, Dwan Edwards (3-tech) and Colin Cole (1-tech)

As our beat writer for ESPN, David Newton, wrote before the draft: "MAY 7, 2014...Panthers Draft need: DT... Carolina used its first two picks on defensive tackles a year ago in Lotulelei and Short, (but) with Colin Cole set to turn 34 in June and signed to a one-year deal and Dwan Edwards turning 33 in May with a year left on his deal, the team won't hesitate to add another piece here."

Nevis just turned 25 a week ago and is just entering his prime years. In his 25 NFL games (in a reserve/rotational role), Nevis has 1 sack, 3 QB hits, 4 TFL, and 50 tackles. He's only one of 3 LSU DTs in the last 9 years that was an All-American - he was also First-Team All-SEC (both coaches and media) and, during his last season alone, he was 4-time SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week (including vs Bama, Florida and #15 Miss State)

Nevis would be entering a perfect situation here. He is not a good fit for a 3-4 defense, which is why he was a bad fit during both his 2.5 years with the Colts and his 2 weeks with the Chargers. Nevis is a 4-3 one-gap DT, like he played at LSU. During his 4 months with the Jags, Nevis was brought in to fill in for one of their injured big-bodied, space-eating one-technique NTs.That is a bad fit for Nevis. The only other team Nevis played for was his 2.6 months with the Cowboys, where everybody was a bad fit. The guy they brought in to replace Nevis was the 19th different lineman to take the field for the Cowboys last season. It was the worst defense in Dallas Cowboys history, the third-worst defense in NFL history, the worst defense in the NFL last year, and got Monte Kiffin replaced by Rod Marinelli after just one year.

Here in Carolina, Nevis should do well as our new 2nd-string/rotational DT. Again, he just turned 25 and is just entering his prime years. And, it was projected that Nevis, whose height and arm length are not up to typical DT standards, would need a few years to adjust to the NFL: "It will be interesting to see how he adjusts to the NFL because I think he will have a tough transition at first, but..I think he has the potential to be a quality starter. He may take a couple of years to work up to that level, but in the mean time I think he could start to contribute to a DT rotation."

Nevis makes up for his lack of standard DT height and arm length with his athleticism, burst, hand usage, moves, hard work, effort, motor and passion...just like he did at LSU, having a better career than pretty much all the 5-star DT recruits LSU has had. He would be a fan favorite here.

Don't worry about it, they went with the ever so cute method of leaving the name out of the title. This thread is better.

Yeah lets quit with thread titles being akin to game show choices...and the free agent pick up is....shutup! And put the name in the thread title already.
