SI.com Draft Grade

Great value picks. Question is, is it better to get values or fill needs? Value picks do put us in good position for trades, not sure it prepares us to compete. As the article mentioned, that was a deep receiving class. Every team that understood it's a passing league took a good bite but panther land knows something the rest of the league doesn't so who am I to judge.

Successful franchises take Bpa and draft for value. Poor franchises reach and draft for need.

It is as simple as that

We are better at WR.  Check

We are better at G      Check

We are better at CB    Check

We got options now at RB, and DE in case we lose DWill contract or cannot sign Kraken long term

Sort of a push on S

Here's a SI draft grade gem from a few years ago.

BROWNS Selected a potentially dominant LT in Wisconsin's Joe Thomas at No. 3 and made the deal with the Cowboys to move up and get QB of the future Brady Quinn of Notre Dame with the 22nd pick. For those decisions alone, the Browns get an A.

RAIDERS Did the smart thing by taking JaMarcus Russell and get bonus points for unloading Randy Moss on the Patriots for a fourth-round pick (used to select Cincinnati cornerback John Bowie). RB Michael Bush of Louisville looks like a fourth-round steal. A-

BILLS Filled major needs with strong value picks, including Cal RB Marshawn Lynch in the first round and Penn State LB Paul Posluszny in the second. Third-round QB Trent Edwards of Stanford provides insurance behind J.P. Losman. A-

I liked our draft. But I guess we are really hoping Godfrey can be somebody at CB because I just found Bostin's selection a little odd. I still think we are lacking speed at WR and another pick there would have been nice.

Our OT is going to come after a June 1st cut. Which is a better move for this year anyway because a solid veteran should outperform a rookie anyway.

Dmitroff and Smith from Atlanta have both said they draft for need and need alone. And they've missed the playoffs twice since 2008.

I don't know what I would classify as successful, but that's pretty close.

I don't think one strategy is necessarily better than the other. Some teams like drafting for need, others like drafting for value. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Drafting for need makes sense to most mainstream analysts because they don't understand the individual teams very well. They see a team loses a player at a particular position and say "Hey, that team has a need there" and thinks a 2nd-3rd round pick would fill it when it's not always that clear of an answer. Hurney always got good grades from pundits like Kiper because he would check off the needs using the draft, even deep into the later rounds. If you're expecting to fill a need in the 4th-7th rounds, you're in for a rude awakening. It's a riskier strategy relying on 21-22 y/o kids to fill needs, but can work perfectly if you nail it just right.

Drafting by BVA (not BPA) is more straightforward but it annoys the less informed. They see a need on our team and whine when we go for a position of relative strength. There's nothing wrong with that. We're getting good players one way or another and not reaching for an Everette Brown or a Fua just because we "need" them. The strategy is not bulletproof but finding solid, young depth through the draft sets you up very well for the coming years. All the GM has to do is work his board that he and his team of scouts have set up and feel confident that they picked up good football players rather than players of need. This strategy does require some "luck", though...like with Star and KK last year. A BVA that is also a need would have to plop in your lap at the right spot...and then everybody would happy. As evidenced by this year, that's not always the case.

SI rates us an 'F' :

"LMAO who the fug cares?!? Draft grades are pointless. We wont really know for 2-3 years! So stupid!!"

SI rates us an 'A-' :

"Hell yeah!! This is great! Suck it haters!! Getts is awesome!!"

CBS gave us a C in the 1st and said "why not Lee?" Because they evaluated both and liked KB better.

They gave us a D in the 2nd because we already have two top DE's. Never mind that we may well need a replacement for one of 'em, and Ealy is 1st round talent.

At this point grading the draft is as much a guessing game as the draft itself.

That's the problem with a successful season the players who can make us leaps and bounds better get drafted before we can pick em... pierre desir goin a pick right before ours hurt..
