Said this in another thread but, he only had 22 reps on the bench. He was out-benched by the Bears new punter O'Donnell, who managed 23.........

Because you block on your back...

Seriously why haven't squats/deads become the standard for measuring strength in the NFL.

You block with your arms and the bench press is all upper body and arm work... so....

If you are blocking properly, at least 80% of your power is coming from your legs and core, hence why "leverage" is so important.  When you properly position yourself, it allows u to derive more power from your legs and core than the other guy which gives you the advantage.

Also doing reps at 225 is a poor measure for offensive linemen.  How many guys are an NFL lineman going to block that weigh 225?  It's a solid measure for guys at skill positions, but linemen should have the weight upped to 300 as it makes more sense.  More reps at 225 does not equate to having a higher "max" nor does it mean you will do more reps at a higher weight than the other guy.

Could be, but in press you also use your lower body (try doing the press with your legs off the ground).

You also want to have strong arms as an OL because if you get them inside under the DL's pits; he isn't going anywhere if your arms are strong enough to resist the chops.

I do agree though, the BP doesn't mean much and personally I suck at it.
