I have heard some say cutting DWill is stupid but they do not provide reasons (I assume his contract is one).  I have a few reasons why they might --

1. DWill decided to use social media to question the Panther's front office.  Think about it; would you keep your job if you were overpaid and your production had been waning recently?

2. The dead money after June 1 is reduced; they want the roster spot for a productive player.

3. Gettlemen mentioned that Gaffney is very good at picking up blitzes.  Williams struggled in that area last season after being good for several years.  It is very important (considering the OL situation) that our RBs block and pick up blitzes properly.  Gaffney is smart and very good in that area.  He is also tough between the tackles--a better fit here than DWill.

We are growing as a team, and if you are in decline, you are not a part of the process.  Williams has a little left, but he was run hard at Memphis and was used a lot last year at age 31.  He is running on an empty tank on bald tires.

There is no way and i repeat no way that either young back is cut in favor of the 2 incumbents.  We will hold onto them all before that happens.  The whole idea is to have these guys ready for when the ax falls and Williams and Stewart get the chop.

This is about winning and losing, only fans and arm chair GM's on the internet and the huddle give a poo about that. Let's start by getting that cleared up right now. Yes he's overpaid, so is Stewart. We know this. But Barner and Gaffney have proven nothing..yet.

i think its hallarious when i said at the start of last season stewart was done in the NFL and people gave me poo.   outside of some miraculous miracle surgery (yes i used 2 miracles)    and him having a minimum 800 yard rushing year.. this will be his last in the NFL, not just carolina. Running backs are a dime a dozen, and bad feet/ankles dont get you anywhere in this league in that posistion.

that said.. dead money means he will be on the roster for the forseable (someone hook a generator up to the bike on the sideline already)

barners drops and inexeperiance, vs dwills age / contract.... you gotta go with cap space and youth on this one..

gaffney put up 1700 yards last season with 9 games over 100.  hes a talented guy...   our rb depth chart at the end end of preseason looks like this.

1T Gaffney

1T Tolbert

3  Barner

IR stewart

IF... and i highly doubt it, but IF stew can play then it still looks like this

Gaffney

Tolbert

Steweart

Barner

D will is on neither of those very effective list... sorry big guy.. its been fun, and wish you luck in baltimore.

This is why fans are fans, and not general managers.

We felt for us, looking at the big picture, that Tyler Gaffney was the best fit," Gettleman said. "Obviously, we want to limit the wear and tear on DeAngelo and Jonathan Stewart, and Tyler Gaffney is a 5-11, 220-pound back that carried the ball 330 times last year and scored 21 touchdowns. He had a real quality senior year at Stanford.

why would you limit carries on a perfectly healthy Dwill?  especially when you already have tolbert and barner to do that.... should read

"gaffney is d wills replacement"

    • We could easily pick apart yesterday’s game: dropped passes, blown coverages, bad tackling and red zone issues to name a few. But it was clear that this wasn’t the same team from earlier in the season. They fought back and hung with the champs until the end. That’s what I was excited to see and it gives me hope that we’re on the right track.
    • I think BY played well today and exceeded expectations. I will temper future expectations as he has to string together many games of consistent quality. One game doesn’t convince me that he is a franchise QB or even a guy you want to stick with for another season. One game doesn’t erase all the negative play and limitations from the past couple of years. I hope he balls out and continues to get better but for me the verdict is still out   That said, I think he gave the team and fans hope yesterday which is a lot more than what we had when we woke up Sunday morning.
    • He was vastly improved today and we need to see more of Bryce the rest of the season to continue evaluate him in order to decide what the heck to do with him at the end of the season. He must play at least like this and improve more from here the rest of the season in order for me to keep him. No more 123 yard passing games and want to see at least this output weekly from him. If this is Bruce improving slowly over time then Canales is even better with developing QB's than I thought he was but still too early to tell and we need to see him the rest of the way as he has at very least earned back the starting gig moving forward.
