The value of a top GM......this man knows his football

I don't know why everyone is so upset with this draft. With out very first pick we went offense and addressed a large problem with out inability to score in the redzone by snagging a 6'5" freak of nature at the WR position. We then shored up the offensive line with a big nasty guard, and we got a big RB to punch it in on the ground.

The only thing we didn't do offensively was draft a OT, and that seems to be because of the fact that we didn't think there was a OT worth drafting. Why in the heck would we waste a pick on a player that we didn't feel lived up to our standards? At least with the defensive guys they can contribute on ST. A bad tackle is a wasted pick, because they don't exactly get to jump on special teams and contribute.

We followed up our offensive picks with a CB and a safety.

I feel like we plugged the holes we could where we could. All of our problems weren't going to be solved with this one draft. The next two years we're going to be replacing Williams and Stewart in the backfield, and signing Luke and Cam to huge deals. May be we stagnate a little this year compared to last, but we're headed in the right direction. Cleaning up the horrible mess that Hurney left us CAP wise and depth wise is taking some time to clean up.

i guess we have no choice but to find out, esp. since gettleman decided to not provide any competition or depth for tackle.

btw, when he said he didn't draft any OTs because he didn't like any of them over who we had there, does that mean the only reason he would draft someone was if he liked them morenthan who we have on the roster? or does that only apply to OT?

serious question.

whatever, i hope it works out because we sure are backed into a corner unkess some starting caliber walks through the front door and asks to join the team at a huge discount.

He mentions it in the after draft presser, I think person asked him a question about not taking a tackle and he says it then.

Wouldn't it take the team actually taking the field before you crown him king of gm's?  Also wouldn't it require you analyzing the other  opportunity costs associated with his decision making, etc.  People love to have blind optimism when it comes to being a fan, I support theoretical good moves, but there have no doubt been questionable and just plain bad moves by him so far.

This is a half-truth. You did not go in depth of why the offense did not score enough points in the playoffs. We did not put up enough points because we could not score on the one yard line. So what did Gettleman do? He drafted a 6"5 wide receiver that will at least make an immediate impact in the redzone. Because he does not even have to jump to catch a fade. He has 35 inch arms and 10" inch hands. He also drafted Trai Turner who NFL. com calls a potential road grader. Next, he drafts a 6"0 226 running back that scored 21 touchdowns last year, combine him with Tolbert that will be a lot of pain for opposing defenses.  Then, we lost because we could not get enough separation. Steve Smith  at age 34, was still our best receiver and once he re injured himself in the second half, the Panthers were cooked. We all know about Brandon Lafell, any 3-5 million receiver would be an instant upgrade. Finally, we have a bunch of unknowns in Edumund Kugbilla, McNutt, King, and Brandon Williams. I am probably sure Gettleman had them in his mind when thinking about drafting a player. I can accept that we differ on whether the offense has improved after the draft. I just want to make sure that people who don't watch the games or are unable to watch the games get the whole story. Because it looks like a lot of people just look at what ESPN and NFL Network say are our positions of needs and hold Gettleman to that or did not pick their favorite player. Gettleman does not nix his words. He said we would be drafting off of value and he did.  Until his plan fails miserably by us finishing the season with a losing record, I won't be changing my opinion of him.

If we threw a 1 on 1 jump balll to smitty in the end zone do you honestly believe he wouldn't have came down with it ?

Assuming Ealy is good, I think we attempt to keep all 3 guys.

My question is why so many huddlers think DG is obsessed with DEs?  He didn't draft Hardy, Chuck or Frank. Horton and Addison were essentially freebie pickups.  He drafted 2 DTs very high last year, but we've been dealing with scrubs at that position since Jenkins and Buckner and was probably our biggest weakness.  Remember Cam's rookie and second year when RBs would go off on us for 150+ yards?  Yea that stopped happening when we got Star and KK.

He chose to use 13 million dollrs of our cap on one, and then drafted one in the 2nd round after having 2 solid starters at that position.  I think  it's fairly obvious how much he values defensive line.

Do me a favor and list Steve Smith's success rate over the last 3 years catching a fade? Because I have mentioned and almost everyone has mentioned that they hate that fade route to Steve Smith because it does not work. Everyone here was jumping for joy when McNutt caught one out of bounds. So yes I would not believe he would have caught it because he no longer had the ability to do it and second I would not expect Shula or Rivera to call for that play because Steve Smith was injured. That is my point, they drafted Kelvin Benjamin and signed Marvin McNutt because they were not having success with the fade route. They drafted players or signed players that fitted Cam's play style and Gettleman's philosophy he wanted touchdown scores (Benjamin-15 Tds. and Gaffney-21 Tds.) then Hog Mollies (Trai Turner and Benjamin can also be put in this category). If Cam's play style and Gettelman's philosophy stops working, then I will change my opinion of them.

To trade down requires a trading partner that wants to trade up.

And if there is a trading partner that wants to trade up, that trading partner has to make it worth your while to move down.

Y'all seem to be under the impression that Gettleman is turning down all these multiple trade offers to trade down that are too good to be true.

Not only that but if you are wheeling and dealing you aren't waiting until it is their turn before you call.   If you want to trade for that spot you pretty much have to have an agreement in place well before that pick comes up.

When the pick comes arrives you then put your trade on the table.

If G-man didn't have a trading partner or at least chatting with him.  When they say "Carolina is on the clock", it's too late to start negotiating for that pick.

the thing is, gman is pretty much a straight shooter, almost to a fault, and he and rivera both seem very content with who thwy have, but don't seem willing to bring in any serious competition to make sure they have the right guys...which i don't understand considering how untested our tackles are at their projected spots.

so as far as OT is concerned, yes, i do have a sense that gettleman isn't going to do much if anything more to better the situation short of sitting and waiting for someone to fall into our lap at a discount.

i like gettleman and wanted him from the beginning, but i don't see him as being mistake free and i feel that he's wrong here. it's my opinion and it doesn't matter to anyone anymore than anyone else's should and i could very well be wrong which would be fine with me. i'm just not at a point where i can blindly trust him and rivera about OT.

duly noted sir...I have the same concern but I know it, you know it, the fan base knows it and gettleman knows that we cant open the season with what we have going on there...maybe we'll bring back Steussie...
