Walter Football 2Nd Round Grades - N F C S

  • falconsb_logo.gifAtlanta Falcons: Ra'Shede Hageman, DE/DT, Minnesota: C Grade

How many defensive linemen do the Falcons need? They signed so many this offseason, and they had so many other needs. There's decent value with Ra'Shede Hageman, so this pick isn't terrible, but Hageman is blocked with all of the talent ahead of him on the depth chart. He's also basically a height-weight-speed guy, so he has a high bust rate. I feel like Atlanta panicked a bit because all of the players it was considering went off the board (Deone Bucannon, Dee Ford).

  • Bucsb_logo.gifTampa Bay Buccaneers: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington: B+ Grade

There are some character issues with Austin Seferian-Jenkins, so he's not a slam-dunk pick or anything, but this is a solid choice for the Buccaneers, who add yet another weapon for Josh McCown. They had to find an upgrade at the tight end position, and Seferian-Jenkins is one of three who fit this range.

    3. saintsb_logo.gifNew Orleans Saints: Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska: C+ Grade

Stanley Jean-Baptiste has a ton of potential, given his massive 6-foot-3 frame. Tall corners are all the range now, so it's easy to understand why a team would take Jean-Baptiste in the second round. The problem is that the Nebraska product is a fourth-round talent. He struggled at times at Nebraska. He may fill a need, however.

4. panthersb_logo.gif Carolina Panthers: Kony Ealy, DE, Missouri: A Grade

What tremendous value. Kony Ealy could have gone as high as No. 16 to Dallas, and I wouldn't have complained too much. It's insane that he dropped all the way to No. 60, and the Panthers obviously recognize that they got a steal because they're not filling a need - at least not an immediate one. Greg Hardy will be hitting free agency next year, and it will be difficult to retain him. Ealy can learn behind him and Charles Johnson and eventually start in 2015.

DIscuss.....</p>

Carolina Panthers: Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State: C- Grade

Ugh, over Marqise Lee and the other tackles? One trusted source we spoke to had Kelvin Benjamin slotted as a mid-round pick. He said that Benjamin couldn't run, and that he was very inconsistent with dropped passes. Lee probably would have been the better option, but at least Carolina is filling a huge need. The team almost had to pick a wideout or a left tackle with the 28th pick.

I'm wondering how willing Hardy or Johnson will be to help train their possible replacement...

Cj is gone after this year. 16 mill salary next season...... Hell to the no. Hardy isnt going anywhere, they will get a deal done. Him and Ealy are the future with star and KK in the middle.

anyway we get rid of Hardy before training camp?

This pick is a pick you won't get immediate satisfaction but you maybe happy as hell about next offseason

what ? there is no way we keep an older CJ versus a younger Hardy. We're going to keep them both this year and then do something with CJ next offseason

I am very entertained by this thread.  Please keep it up.

Many assume it's Hardy that is leaving but everybody knows it's Johnson.

I dont see how out its been so hard to figure out, Johnson is making QB money or at least he will next year. Thats just crazy, i dont want to see him leave but we cant pay him that.

Pretty sure we'd have to pay him an outrageous amount of money.

No.

There is $6 million in dead money next year on his contract. His cap hit if we keep him on the same deal is $17 million. So we can either restructure, pay him $17 million, or cut him and only have $6 million count against the cap. So cutting him would save us $11 million if we can't get a team friendly restructure of some sort.

We wouldn't be paying him a cent, it's just his prorated signing bonus still has that extra $6 million left.
