Josh Gordon will be banned for the season

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon could face a season-long suspension after a second failed drug test months ago, this time for marijuana, sources told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" on Friday.

Reached by phone Friday afternoon, Gordon said: "That's something you're going to have to talk to [agent] Drew Rosenhaus about. I really don't know anything about it."

Andrew Weber/USA TODAY SportsJosh Gordon could face a season-long suspension after a second failed drug test months ago, this time for marijuana, sources told "Outside the Lines."

Asked whether he planned to dispute the test, Gordon said, "I'm going to have to find out about that later. You need to call Drew," before hanging up.

Rosenhaus declined to comment but said the information was "not true."

The 23-year-old Gordon was expected to be the top target for Brian Hoyer or rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel this upcoming season.

Gordon, who was suspended without pay last season for two games and two additional game checks for his first violation of the league's policy, led the Browns with 87 receptions and had nine touchdowns. He led the NFL with 1,646 receiving yards and became the first player with consecutive 200-yard receiving games.

He said last year's suspension was the result of him using cough syrup that contained codeine -- a banned substance.

Two sources told "Outside the Lines" on Friday that Gordon's latest violation is the result of marijuana being found during a drug test. One source said that Gordon received a letter in early winter from a league physician stating he had failed a test. A second letter, informing Gordon that he faced a 16-game suspension but had the right to appeal, was sent in late April.

Gordon had drug-testing problems in college as well. He was dismissed from the team at Baylor after being suspended twice for marijuana use. He transferred to Utah but didn't play there after failing another drug test.

Gordon is considered the star on an offense that added Manziel on Thursday night with the 22nd selection in the first round of the draft.

Prior to the draft, Gordon pushed behind the scenes for the Browns to get Manziel.

"I think I was just a big fan of his overall game, his prowess on it," Gordon said Friday on "SVP & Russillo" on ESPN Radio, before OTL reported the substance abuse policy violation. "His outlook on it. His fire and ambition and will to win was greater than I think any other prospect in the draft.

"Despite all the mixed reviews and the media downsizing him, his perseverance seemed to be a lot greater than that. I saw something a lot deeper than just his talent that could take us to the next level."

    • It didn’t feel like we’re the Bills bc we’re not a consistent conference contender yet we’re a rebuilding team. But with the game on the line we played just like the Bills went straight down the field and scored a tuddy then converted a 2pt conversion I have to give credit where credit is due. And the chiefs played us like we were the Bills in an AFC championship game, drive down the field and kicked a walk off FG to win at the end very similar to me. Are saying our defense stunk yesterday? Vs an elite offense team with elite coaching an elite QB man idk what you want them to do. KC does these things to the best defenses in the league consistently to win AFC chips and Super Bowls let’s not devalue who they are. I saw us play KC to the wire and barely lose defense did its thing as much as it could. Bingo!!! We’re also forgetting how injured we’ve been defensively this year, yes we need to build up the D but adding a few pieces and D Browns successful rehab should make us a very strong unit again. Couple that with the offense we saw yesterday and we’re winning our division.
    • Canales deserves a lot of credit. I'm very pleased. He's definitely making strides with Bryce. I also think some of his lack of commitment to Bryce as the starter is to motivate Bryce. I think he liked what he saw when Bryce was benched.  Even the Defense looks tremendously better with just a couple more pieces getting healthy. Wonnum has made our pass rush viable again.  I would love to see this team with one more good player across the defensive front, DT or an edge rusher.
    • I didn’t see any limitations yesterday
