(By David Scott, [email protected]) bGetting to know: Ron Milus, Secondary coach/b p/strongBackground:/strong In his first year with the Panthers. He previously worked with the Broncos (2000-2002), Cardinals (2003), Giants (2004-05) and Rams (2006-08).p/strongWhat you need to know:/strong Milus inherits an experienced defensive backfield, with returning starters strongChris Gamble/strong, strongChris Harris /strongand strongCharles Godfrey /strongand a seasoned first-year starter in strongRichard Marshall/strong. One of Milus' primary tasks will be to help rookie second-round pick strongSherrod Martin /strongdevelop and hopefully be ready to play in the nickel defensive package.p/bObservations/b p/span class=icon icon-bullet/spanRookie running back strongMike Goodson /strongis getting a lot of repetitions. The Panthers hope to use him in a variety of ways. His quickness shows, but he hasn't had a real ldquo;wowrdquo; moment yet in camp.p/span class=icon icon-bullet/spanDefensive line coach strongBrian Baker/strong, in his first season with the team, is highly energetic, vocal and detail-oriented. He isn't hesitant to correct and exhort players, and seems to try to use time wisely with his players even when they're on the sidelines. p/When defensive end strongTyler Brayton /strongwas stretching, tired and hot, Baker reminded Brayton to eat well and hydrate in order to combat the hot, humid Spartanburg weather.p/span class=icon icon-bullet/spanVeteran receiver strongMuhsin Muhammad /strongmade a nifty grab on a pass over the middle from fourth-team quarterback strongHunter Cantwell/strong. It's hard to imagine there being a better-conditioned player in the league than Muhammad, especially at his age (36).p/span class=icon icon-bullet/spanDefensive end strongJulius Peppers /strongmade the stop on receiver strongSteve Smith /strongafter a quick out pass. That's about as close as the Panthers can get to having two superstars collide on their practice field.p/bBy the numbers/b p/0 -- Number of non-NFL employed referees/officials working training camp this year, apparently due to budget cuts.p/5 -- Number of assistant coaches in their first season with the Panthers.p/301 -- New York Giants' rushing yards last season when the Panthers were playing without defensive tackle strongMaake Kemoeatu/strong.p/bQuoting/b p/span class=icon icon-bullet/spanldquo;I'm bummed out.rdquo; Defensive tackle strongMaake Kemoeatu /strongon his Achilles tendon injury, which requires surgery Wednesday and might cause him to miss the entire season.p/span class=icon icon-bullet/spanYou might be surprised who Panthers defensive coordinator strongRon Meeks /strongwas talking about when he said: ldquo; He's a very enthusiastic young man and he does a great job.rdquo; It was head coach strongJohn Fox/strong. Turns out they're both 54. ldquo;I'm a young man, rdquo; said Meeks, who turns 55 this month, 51/2 months before Fox.p/span class=icon icon-bullet/spanAsked how often he Twitters, Fox said: ldquo; It depends on what you define as twittering.rdquo;p/span class=icon icon-bullet/spanldquo;I've been watching the movie lsquo;300' a lot. I've been inspired by those abs.rdquo; Center strongRyan Kalil/strong, joking about his workout regimen during the offseason.p/bQuick hits/b p/span class=icon icon-bullet/spanDefensive back strongC.J. Wilson /strongand receiver strongKenny Moore /stronghad quite a collision in the secondary after a pass was thrown to Moore during practice. Neither player was hurt.p/span class=icon icon-bullet/spanPeppers, who has a reputation for being quiet, was holding court with Muhammad, strongDeangelo Williams/strong, strongJonathan Stewart/strong, strongCharles Johnson /strongand strongChris Harris /strongon the sidelines late in the practice. They all seemed to be enjoying the conversation.p/span class=icon icon-bullet/spanIn case you missed it, defensive tackle strongBabatunde Oshinowo/strong, cut recently by the Panthers, signed last week with San Francisco. The move sends him back close to where he attended college (Stanford).p/bFan's Guide/b p/strongWEDNESDAY'S PRACTICES:/strong 9:10 a.m. and 3:10 p.m.p/strongWEATHER:/strong Mostly cloudy. • He might have a lucky sack then crickets the rest of the game.
    • Panthers' Bryce Young took a significant step forward in Week 9 Bryce Young is back as the Carolina Panthers‘ starting quarterback, and he is fresh off his best performance of the season. It was an encouraging showing — one that resulted in only the Panthers' second win — for a young quarterback who was previously benched. Highest-Graded Quarterbacks in Week 9 Young finished Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints with a 77.8 PFF overall grade, his highest grade this season and the third-highest of his career. His stat line doesn’t look overly impressive, but a major reason for that is his two big-time throws being dropped and intercepted — two unlucky plays that would have made his box score better reflect his performance. There’s no hiding that the Panthers' offense has struggled with Young under center. The 2023 No. 1 overall pick looked lost and broken in his first two starts of 2024, but after five weeks as a backup, he seems to have found his confidence again, putting together his two best performances of the season since returning to helm the offense. It took until the second quarter for the Panthers' offense to get going in Week 9, but a big third-down conversion led to their first touchdown of the game. https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-carolina-panthers-bryce-young-significant-step-forward-week-9
    • This is likely a loss. Just look at the stats of their last game; 26 pass attempts versus 31 runs. Daboll knows well enough not to put everything on Daniel Jones. They'll likely stick to that ratio and only have Jones throw a safe pass or two along with a scramble. A big factor with the Saints is that we somehow found a way to stop their first two drives from being touchdowns, and even forced a three and out or two. That's going to be really hard to replicate, and regardless of QB, we just lack enough offensive power to get into a shootout, especially with our O-line not at full strength. I kinda expect our line to utter collapse and Canales utterly refusing to not go pass happy against a defense much more suseptible to the run. But hey, I'd like to be proven wrong. Maybe Canales will decide to throw Brooks out there for his debut and we end up with the reincarnation of Double Trouble. If we somehow win, that's my guess on how.
