28. Carolina Panthers Kelvin Benjamin WR Florida State C+

 

The Panthers fill a need, but Benjamin is an older prospect that is one-dimensional and stiff. He’ll be a jump ball target for Cam Newton, but the Panthers could have taken Morgan Moses or a similar receiver like Cody Latimer that is better overall.

28. Carolina: Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State: The Panthers fill a gaping hole here with a huge specimen in Benjamin, who is one of this year's most polarizing prospects. His size/speed combination is uncanny, but concentration lapses have held him back from emerging as the top-10 talent that his athleticism says he should be. Despite his inconsistency, he should present a huge upgrade to what the Panthers currently have stocked at the receiver position, and is undeniably one of the most explosive big-play threats in the class. Massive upside, but Marquis Lee is probably the better overall WR prospect and is still available here. GRADE: B-

This low in the first round, Benjamin is a relatively good pick, and if he’s able to put it all together, he’s an amazing fit for Carolina’s offense. It’s possible that Benjamin will be limited to touchdown duty early on in his NFL career — while he’s obviously physically dominant, he will get it handed to him for a while by bigger, better cornerbacks and more complex coverages. He could also be used as a tight end-style target in the slot, or lined up in the seam. Benjamin has clear assets as a player; his liabilities will have to be managed as he learns the ins and outs of the receiving game at the professional level.

How This Pick Goes Right: 

 

Not to pat myself on the back too strongly, but this is the exact type of pick that I expected the Panthers to make since they jettisoned Steve Smith. I've always believed that they were looking to build a young offense to grow with Cam Newton, rather than bring in established names that wouldn't be around when this team hits full stride. 

 

 

 

How This Pick Could Go Terribly Wrong: 

 

Now, as for Benjamin himself—he's not very good, yet. 

 

He's big and ridiculously athletic, so that's exactly what you're looking for. He's going to be a beast in the red zone. He's going to make big plays. Yet, he's going to make a bunch of mistakes as well and he might be two or three years away before his positive plays outweigh the head-scratchers.

28, Carolina Panthers: Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State

 

The grade: C-

 

The risk: The hope is Benjamin's hands – particularly on routine throws – are not an issue. The reality is he drops easy throws. Knocking this grade down further is the fact it doesn't address the offensive line.

 

The reward: Benjamin is a boom or bust selection and if he booms his talent is limitless. He's arguably the most physically gifted receiver in the class and could develop into a good target for Cam Newton.

The Panthers were in major need of a receiver and opted for Benjamin (6-foot-5, 235 pounds) over the still-available and smaller Marqise Lee. Benjamin played only two seasons for the Seminoles, but he put himself on the map big time with a huge 2013. Benjamin is not exactly polished, but he has the height and strength to help Cam Newton and the passing game.

Yeah I don't see how it is a C- pick. Most of these sites don't give out below a C- so it is really an F on a curve.

 

It is a B on size and potential alone.

I don't really care about grades, or the opinions of analyst that are really just guessing anyway.  IMO, its a high risk, high reward pick.  If this guy fulfills his potential, then we are going to be getting a real steal.

The only time you get a good grade is when you do what these analysts think you should do, and I think we are all in general agreement that most of them are idiots, so yeah I don't give a fug what grade we get. If I remember correctly, we got really good grades for teh Jimmeh.

I see they're still pissed we didn't take Morgan Moses I see and nabbed a prospect most of those sites had going to teams like Sam Fran or Seattle
