Carolina Panthers safety Charles Godfrey has accepted a pay cut, reducing his 2014 base salary from $5 million to a nonguaranteed $750,000.

Godfrey has the opportunity to earn back $1.7 million through a $106,250 per-game active roster bonus.

The deal was changed Monday and still includes a $100,000 workout bonus and $100,000 in incentives.

Godfrey tore his Achilles tendon last season.

This offseason, the Panthers have acquired safeties Roman Harper and Thomas DeCoud.

In 2015 and 2016, his base salaries are still $5 million and $5.3 million, respectively.

In 2012, he signed a $23.1 million contract extension that included a $5 million signing bonus and $6.8 million in total guaranteed money.

Not debating anything you're making. Just a statement about the tardiness of our new found wealth. With more money free agency could've been seen on a different lens by the front office.

let me preface by pointing to Bell signing his tender late...

it's just as likely to speculate that this conversation had already taken place and the contract in Godfrey's hands to sign perhaps with a deadline before the draft..  The ultimatum already given as a June 1st cut and the space that could be expected to free up.

With a total amount of space that could be expected had Godfrey signed (which would be less than a June 1st cut), minus the rookie reserve and the rest would be available for FA...

Regardless to what extent, I have a hard time believing Gettleman didn't already have a game plan prepared for both FA and the rookie reserve.  Especially when both sides knew the worst case scenario would be 5.5mil instantly available.

In point of cold hard fact, this move is justified, even good.

On a personal level though, ya gotta feel for the guy.  I can't imagine where I'd be or what I'd be doing after being told I lost that much money in one day.

But then, you can't really be afraid to make those kinds of decisions if you want to run a successful pro football team, can you?
