Scouts overrated list---from Prisco

Know who else was scared of contact and couldn't/wouldn't shed a block to help defend the run game?

Deion Sanders.

Now, I'm not saying Gilbert is another Deion Sanders, I'm just saying that if his pass defense is outstanding, sometimes you're willing to give a little in the run game for the shut-down corner.

The question is, is Gilbert a shut-down corner?

ummmmmmm no

i know there has been talk about a DE in the first for us.

I've watched a bit on this Ealy guy. And he doesn't pop at all for me. Looks like a 3rd or 4th rounder. Am i just missing something?

No you aren't missing anything. Fact is he got outplayed by Michael Sam who is slower and less athletic. Plus Sam played his position as an undersized defensive end.

Clowney should top that list. hes horrible in the run game. hes looked at as one of the best DEs to come out in a long time. but most ends that get his type of hype have all around game. hes a glorified 3rd down pass rusher. if hes on the field 1st and 2nd downs teams will/should run right at him.

Auburn threw the ball 284 times last year.

Yeah, that ain't like the Mike Leach Air Raid, but almost 300 passes is still a pretty significant sample. And Robinson didn't perpetually struggle or get constantly owned on those passing downs. He was consistent and held his own on passing downs all year.

compare how much Robinson was trained for the run in comparison to the other top OTs by how often their team ran/passed in 2013

Robinson, Auburn - 28% pass, 72% run

Lewan, Michigan - 44% pass, 56% run

Kouandjio, Bama - 44% pass, 56% run

Matthews, aTm - 51% pass, 49% run

Moses, Virginia - 51% pass, 49% run

seems like a lot of people agree with Pete Prisco's NFL sources that Robinson is great at run blocking but very raw in pass blocking...

-"Robinson is not nearly as polished as a pass blocker as Matthews, which can be partially blamed on the system Auburn runs. Robinson was not asked to pass protect frequently in college, leaving that area in his game less developed. When he has pass blocked, his protection schemes have usually involved a moving pocket."

-"In Auburn’s run-heavy offense — which led the FBS in rushing yards per game last season — Robinson rarely had a chance to showcase his pass blocking. NFL talent evaluators have noticed. “He had some issues in pass protection, which is obviously something that has to be corrected and has to be maximized once he gets to the NFL,” Kiper said. “He'll be a little bit of a work in progress.” McShay said that Robinson’s pass blocking needed some polishing, pointing out that he “holds too much” and that his hands are out of place far too often.""

-Robinson "played in a relatively simple collegiate system which rarely asked him to pass block on an island. ... Robinson's relative inexperience (especially in pass protection) appears to be the only thing that could keep him from earning a blue chip grade."

-"Teams may have a tough time getting a feel for just how well Robinson can pass block because he wasn't asked to do it often enough at Auburn. .. On the few occasions per game in which Robinson dropped back into a pass set and had to mirror pass rushers, he showed some flaws. ... Part of Robinson's problem is anticipation. He doesn't anticipate the snap particularly well and has trouble anticipating what rushers are planning to do."

-"Draft gurus praise Robinson's run blocking but insist his technique in pass protection needs to be polished."

-"NFL.com's Mike Mayock and Bucky Brooks couldn't say enough about the Auburn star lineman, but each had a caveat about Robinson: his pass protection skills. Auburn was a "run heavy" team, and..the modern NFL is a passing league, ...I'm not sure Greg Robinson is a "Day 1" starter for any team who lives and dies by the pass. That said, for a team yearning to improve their run game, Robinson would be a godsend."

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000347060/article/jeremiah-auburns-greg-robinson-can-be-a-halloffamer

Mentioning any player as a potential Hall of Famer -- much less one who never has taken an NFL snap -- makes observers sit up and take notice, which means former Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinsonwill be a heavily scrutinized guy the next few seasons.

Robinson was the prospect NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah mentioned when he was asked if there are any future Hall of Famers in this year's draft class during an interview on "The Dave Dameshek Football Program".

"I've compared (Robinson) to Willie Roaf a little bit," Jeremiah said.

Roaf played 13 seasons in the NFL and was an 11-time Pro Bowler. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012. Roaf, who was 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, was the eighth overall pick in the 1993 draft, by the New Orleans Saints.

And also this:

Robinson has played just two seasons of offensive tackle and arrived at Auburn as one of the nation's top high school guards. He is a road-grading run blocker who must improve in pass protection.

A fact, of course, that I have not denied.  BUT...

While Jeremiah writes in his rankings that Robinson's run blocking is more advanced than his pass blocking, he also wrote that Robinson "has enough quickness to cover up speed rushers and he can squat to stall power rushers."

So if you were going to draft an OT, who would you rather have?  Kyle Long (Jake Matthews)?  Or Willie Roaf (Greg Robinson)?

So if you were going to draft an OT, who would you rather have? Kyle Long (Jake Matthews)? Or Willie Roaf (Greg Robinson)?

Roaf didn't have the inexperience and question marks as a pass blocker that Robinson has. Roaf's La Tech offense was 44% pass, 56% run - just like Lewan and Kouandjio

Robinson, Auburn - 28% pass, 72% run

Lewan, Michigan - 44% pass, 56% run

Kouandjio, Bama - 44% pass, 56% run

Matthews, aTm - 51% pass, 49% run

Moses, Virginia - 51% pass, 49% run

from another article:

"Matthews is what you typically expect to get at the very top of the draft. He is a refined pass-protector who should be able to start immediately at left tackle and be effective. On the other hand, Robinson comes with a lack of clarity that could scare off some franchises.

The uncertainty with Robinson is born out of his lack of refinement. He is a raw athlete who played in an exceptionally run-heavy offense. ... Not only did this offense give teams very little time to watch Robinson in pass protection, it also made it easier for the left tackle to be an effective pass-protector.

Defenses had to account for the run on every single snap and couldn't be aggressive on passing downs. They also had to account for the very creative read-option runs that were built into the offense, making them hesitant at the snap. Furthermore, Robinson blocked for a mobile quarterback who felt pressure and adjusted in the pocket well.

In the NFL, nobody runs an offense like Gus Malzahn's. ... Robinson won't be selected in the top five of the draft to be a left tackle in an option offense.

He will be expected to be a pass-blocking star who can play without any help from tight ends or running backs against the best pass-rushers in the NFL. The 21-year-old certainly has the physical traits to become that player, but it will likely take a few years before he develops his all-around game to be trusted in that role.

...

He could immediately start at guard and be a dominant run-blocker who receives help in the passing game from the inside or outside...Robinson would fit that role perfectly because his run-blocking ability and overall strength is incredible."

lol... wait and watch.

Talent is talent.

And a last name doesn't make you competent NFL OT.

There are reasons that Robinson is the consensus top-rated OT in this draft, though those reasons you ignore or pout and whine about.

Wait and watch.

    • They can’t reasonably fire a rookie head coach who was saddled with one of the worst first overall QBs of all time. And at times made said QB look decent to serviceable.  If the team was 3-11 at this point next season, fire everyone.
