I'm going by his own statements.

Gettleman compares trading down to 'exchanging a dollar for two dimes'.  Likewise, when he's been asked about trading up, he's not a fan of what you have to give up to do so.  That's also not a shock if you've ever listened to his Giants mentor, Ernie Accorsi, talk about drafting philosophy.

There are some GMs who love to trade (Hurney did, so did his mentor, Bobby Beathard) while others preach about value and patience.  Which philosophy is better? That's a whole debate in itself.

I acknowledge that our trading up or down most certainly could happen.  I just don't expect it.

Statistically speaking, waiting is better. and it's also pretty damn evident from the crap Hurney pulled his last few years here...

I think trading a up a couple of spots here and there can make sense for the right prospect, but making big jumps up the board or moving up near the top of the draft simply costs too much.  The only position on the field that justifies the type of trade that ATL made for Julio Jones is a franchise QB that you feel damn sure about.  No other position has the impact to justify giving up that much.  You just create too many other holes in the process.

Fans and media love "bold moves", but the reality is 'bold' and 'smart' sometimes don't go together.

If I'm asked to choose between those two, I prefer smart. I'd theorize that the teams that make those 'bold' moves are probably the ones who make that mistake of believing that they are just 'a player away'.

Ultimately though, trading up, trading down or standing pat...you can make any of it work if you know what you're doing when it comes to evalueating players.

If you stink at player evaluation, the rest of it doesn't mean squat.

Ernie gave up quite a bit to secure the services of Eli Manning. There are different ways to look at it. Gettleman could have watched Ernie draft and said to himself "man I would never do that". I bet Ernie regrets some of his decisions even. Just looking at the Giants from 1998-2006 (the Ernie Accorsi era). You see some great picks sprinkled with embarrassing busts. He did very well in rounds 3-6 though. So many quality players.

Stevie Johnson | BUF

(May 8, 2014 12:09 PM EDT)

Sources tell WGR 550 Buffalo that the Bills will likely put Stevie Johnson on the trade block if they draft a wide receiver early.

It's no secret the Bills' new coaching staff in 2013 had a rocky relationship with Johnson. Buffalo already paid Johnson a $1.75 million March roster bonus, but could get out of his $3.65 million salary by moving on. Johnson could probably attract a fifth- or sixth-round draft pick. The Bills have been heavily connected to Sammy Watkins, Odell Beckham, and North Carolina TE Eric Ebron.
