Darin Gantt's Panthers Draft Needs

you make it seem like it was an arbitrary, split-second decision to tag Hardy and let other players go. if there is one thing Gettleman does well, its making good calculated decisions. this seems no different to me. i find it hard to believe that Gettleman was simply being reactionary through the first week of free agency. its just not the way he does business. he seems to examine every aspect, every possibility. he's the type that has contingency plans. its just unreasonable to me to suggest that tagging Hardy was a rash decision that will severely hurt the Panthers.

No I hope it was a calculated decision. He saw how strong this draft was at WR, Oline and Cb. So remaking the offense makes sense this off-season while keeping your front 7 together.

It looks rash if he doesn't get a long-term deal done and waste getting stronger on offense with this gift wrapped draft.

I think he will be Everett Brown 2.0.

Other then Clowney most scouts are saying this is a weak 4-3 DE draft. But yeah lets take a De in the 1st round.

Agreed this is a weak 4-3 draft. Still think Kareem Martin would be a steal in the 3rd . Would be able to play inside & out reminds me of Hardy a little.

Why do you always say "I think..." and then fail to back it up with concrete reasons about the player, then proceed as if your statement has become fact?  When did you talk to  "most scouts?"  There are several players who are quality DE prospects, but the draft is not deep at the position.  Maybe that is why you draft one early.

Perhaps you should list why you see Ealy as Brown 2.0.   Ask your scout buddies to help you out.

Not explosive lacks moves doesn't do anything great to set him apart from the DE in later rounds.

Who are the scouts that provided this information (you referred to "most scouts"?

CBS:

Ealy's athleticism jumps off the tape. Operating mostly at RDE for the Tigers, Ealy shows good initial quickness off the snap to force right tackles into respecting his speed rush, but saw time all over the defensive line and even as a stand-up linebacker. He has a quick spin move back to the inside to complement his speed and has developing pass-rush technique, including an over-arm swim and a power slap. Perhaps best of all, Ealy possesses the flexibility to turn the corner efficiently and closes quickly, demonstrating the ability to rip the ball free from the quarterback with a powerful chop or with an explosive collision. Impressive straight-line acceleration for a man of his size. Good recognition to get his hands into passing lanes when he can't get to the quarterback. Times his leap well and long arms and good hand-eye coordination. Undeniable upside.

Where do you get Everette Brown 2.0?  He is bigger, faster, and as quick.

He's on Prisco overrated list and Kevin Wediel and Greg Cossell have been on WFNZ telling how unimpressed they are with him.

I honestly haven't read that many scouting reports on him.

I have looked up his highlight reels though.  Watching his full games tapes just leaves me with a 'meh' feeling.

I'd hope for the best if he's the pick, but he's one that'd leave me with a lot of questions.

Somebody had him in a mock.

I heard at one point that they were high on Crighton.  A word on Ealy--reminds me of the George Selvie/Pierre-Paul situation--Selvie was the 2x All-American (Michael Sam) and Pierre Paul (Ealy) kind of flew under the radar.

I don't know, but Ealy has been dropping and the "experts" could be right, but they are wrong just as often.

The position seems strong on our roster right now, but in 16 games, it could be our biggest need.

You can say that about Qb, RB, MLb, and TE.

The difference is other positions are the biggest need now.

You can't go into a season worried about your strongest position with the most depth becoming your weakest position thru mishaps.

If Ealy is the pick I'm not watching the rest of the draft.

Why did the hype on this forum for him begin? Because we brought him in for a visit? Or was there something?

Probably a reaction to all those who said "I'll quit being a fan if we don't draft WR".

History of "can't miss" WR is not too good, so bpa strategy means a possibly "unpopular" pick might be very realistic.
