Darin Gantt's Panthers Draft Needs

SIgning Hardy to a long-term deal right now is very dumb--THAT would be fugging up, in my opinion.  I felt that he would not do it, he has not done it, and I am happy about it.

i see what youre saying but i still disagree that signing Hardy long term is a bad thing. it would lock him in for a few years and giving him 13 mil or so for 3 years would help us negotiate a better deal with CJ. i think signing Hardy long-term is the only way we keep him and CJ both. otherwise, one or the other will have to be a cap-casualty. i say give Hardy the same amount of money as his franchise tender, but spread it out over 2-4 years and give us leverage for talks with CJ. Hardy gets his money, Panthers keep the benefit of leverage. win-win

its for this reason that i foresee a deal getting done by the deadline. we may still draft a potential replacement, in fact we probably will. it gives the Panthers leverage in contract talks with both Hardy and Johnson. Gettleman doesnt make rash decisions, which is what tagging Hardy would be if no deal gets done. it was a calculated move to give the team more time to work out a contract with the man. drafting a serviceable DE will help accomplish this. in Gettleman i trust...

Drafting a serviceable De takes time. Because the guy has to prove he's that. It's to late trying a move like this. When Gettelmen tagged Hardy and let other players walk. That locked him into making sure Hardy got a long term deal.

Drafting a DE high could also mean thinking about the future at OT or WR.

Some teams just want veteran players on some positions. Drafting a DE would allow us to free up some money in the future and maybe we could use them on a OT or WR etc.

So instead of paying both CJ and GH 13-15 million a year in years to come, you pay one and have a cheap young DE on the other side freeing up money for other positions.  This is pretty much the essence of the BPA idea.

I don't disagree with what you're saying at all. I just disagree with people that say DE is a bigger need than WR/OT.

They just gave hardy a million five. They have a good rapport. A long term deal is coming. , that or play the franchise year as a prove it year. See if he busts ass this year again. If he does, pay him big time money.

According to most people around here we are gonna go 4-12 next year. We have Cam and Luke and Hardy and Star etc etc... We still have a good ass team. Reigning DPOY, reigning NFL Coach of the year. Let's get it.

Hardy is already demanding top DE money so the risk of him getting injured is on him. I doubt there is a lot of difference in what we are paying him this year and what he wants yearly on a long term contract give or take some a couple million. Granted, you can back load his contract and free cap this year but that usually bites you in the ass in the coming years.

Again you're taking a risk that the guy you drafted is even good.

Remember Evertte Brown was suppose to be leverage and security against Peppers. That planning doesn't work. And right now we're in the situation where other positions on the team need way more attention.

The fact that we tagged Hardy hurt us from making other moves in FA.

Now using the draft for the position you spent the bulk of our FA money is overkill.

Then we shouldn't have done that this year. We could've signed players and not let 2 to 3 positions go to hell. For the money we allocated to Hardy.

When Gettelmen tagged Hardy he said having more time getting a long term deal with Hardy was the reason for doing it.

Not necessarily.  You know that you need to maintain the front four, but you cannot afford to lose Hardy right now.  5 year contract or 1-year franchise tag?

Not re-signing the WRs and cutting Smitty did not send the positions to hell--signing them all and allowing Smitty to exercise his option would have sent our WR situation to hell.   Look at the cap and tell me who he should have kept--then we will look at that player's productivity.

I do not see any other position going to hell.  Sure, we need a T.  Many teams do.  We will address it, on our terms.  Gettlemen is doing a great job.

We tagged Hardy at 13 mil when our offensive line is pathetic and our weapons for Cam are barely enough as is. We are far from being a "good ass team".

Tagging Hardy made our oline go to hell. We didn't have enough money to sign free agents that would've really helped our line and also weapons for Cam that are more than just barely above average at best.
