Dark Horse Candidate at 28: Xavier Su'a Filo

Recommended Posts

no guards in the first round unless you have everything else squared away.

You don't think a guard could ever be BPA (even at 28)?

Pick 28 for a potential Steve Hutchinson / Larry Allen / Steve Wisniewski seems like a steal to me.

We are a run first team. I could see this going down. I would still would like to have Shaizer though.

Being a run 1st team is one thing but we still have to be able to pass the ball and have a threat of it.

If we are building from the inside out, Silatolu-Kalil-Su'a Filo is a dang good inferior line going forward.

Not really interested in building an "inferior" line.

Definitely think he'd be worthy of the 28th pick, I just hope he goes earlier and pushes down someone else we could use more.

Uhhhh... did I miss training camp already?

Amini at LG is not written in stone. He's been great at opening up holes in the run game but he doesn't offer much in pass protection. If G-Man loves Xavier enough, he'll draft him and potentially place him at LG (sending Silatolu to RG in the process).

They would start Xavier at RG. Lol, there's a reason when it was mentioned the only two players with starting spots named was Amini and Kalil.

2013 Draft

#7 overall Jonathan Cooper North Carolina

#10 overall Chance Warmack Alabama

#20 overall Kyle Long Oregon

So still a guard is not a First Round Pick? Hmmm....

an April 24, 2012 article in the New York Times addressed why guards are becoming so important in today's NFL:

"While edge blockers are on the down trend, interior blockers are on the up....Having quality guards is important because many teams have taken their blitzes from the outside to the inside. That's the fastest route to the quarterback and also creates visual congestion, which can disrupt the timing of the quick-passing game. It's more important than ever for a guard to be consistent and smart.

...

In fact, they may soon be more significant than ever because, as we'll examine next, rushing attacks are taking on a whole new, space-oriented dimension. With more run plays destined to occur out of passing formations, offensive linemen will have to be more mobile than ever. That's convenient because..the sophistication and speed of defensive blitzes has increased the athletic demands on pass blockers.

...

We're seeing this already. In 2011, teams ran the ball a record 5,164 times out of three-plus receiver sets (that averages to 10 times per game for each team). The previous record, set in '08, had been 4,767 runs. Running backs are taking more handoffs from shotgun formations, they're running more draws and a lot of their would-be handoffs are being delivered in the form of a screen or swing pass.

...

It makes all the sense in the world to run out of spread sets. After all, by their very nature, they force the defense to widen. This creates wider running lanes....and the wider you spread, the easier it is to recognize complex disguise and attacks from a defense"

Rotoworld:

"As a second-round rookie in 2012, Silatolu struggled as a pass protector while making 15 starts at LG as a rookie in 2012. Then he blew out his knee three games into the 2013 season. He'll be a question mark (for 2014)... The Midwestern State product had a rough rookie season in 2012, grading out as a bottom-five guard in Pro Football Focus' ratings...Silatolu was coming on after a shaky rookie season in 2012 before being lost for the 2013 season after a torn right ACL in Week 4"

another site:

"In pass protection Silatolu still has a ways to go... with Jordan Gross retired, his deficiencies in pass protection will no longer get masked by being sandwiched between Gross and Ryan Kalil"
