Odds on trading Hardy

With pass rushers so coveted, I would say very slim .... except for how much money we have tied-up in the DE position.  DG has to have a plan for the Johnson / Hardy situation and I doubt it is to have them both on the team long-term.

The franchise tag would have returned 2 first round picks.  If DG does trade him, lets say it is for a top 5 pick and a third round this year.  We get Robinson or Matthews to plug in at LT and still have our #28 pick to truly select BPA.  This would be a dream ...

1A - Robinson / Matthews (LT)

1B - OBJ / Cooks / Lee (WR)

I don't think it's out of the question. I think Gettleman has something working, and here's why...

(First, put on your tinfoil hat). Rewatch the Gettleman presser. When asked about trading up, his body language suddenly went weird for about 30 seconds and he blushed a little. I don't know if it's anything involving Hardy, but he may be looking for a way to grab one of the top LT's or WR's.

Of course, next week when nothing happens, I will claim my account was hacked and would never have posted anything so ridiculous.

I won't ever say it can't happen. If a team is stupid enough to make a ridiculous offer (Raiders), then I think its possible. If they offered a 1st rounder this year and we could get Watkins, with a second this year and a couple early picks next year, it might be damn tempting.

Hell, we gave up two first rounders for Gilbert. Not saying it will happen, because I don't think it will, but never say never.

I think it depends on two things: first, the likelihood a new contract will happen; and second, what another team decides to offer.

The big problem is what it will cost to sign Hardy long term. We already have a lot tied up to Johnson, and with big deals for Cam and Luke on the horizon, will Gettleman want to give out another big contract to Hardy and have a significant amount of cap tied up in the D-Line?

I'm not sure. If he can land a really good DE prospect in the first round that can step in and contribute from day one, then it wouldn't surprise me to see him try to move Hardy for extra picks.

That brings me to the other part. If a team like the Raiders comes along and offer us a first round pick, or a team like the Jaguars offer us a first round pick or combination of picks, then it would be a tempting proposition. Yes we'd lose Hardy, but it could open up the scenario of grabbing a top tackle and another D-Lineman in the late first round. Then if there are further picks, that fits Gettleman's approach of liking to keep hold and stock up on draft picks.

Personally I'd rather see a long term deal happen. But if a team does offer a hell of a good deal, or Gettleman doesn't think/want to over pay Hardy to get a long term deal, then moving him could be an option too. Not convicted it will happen, though Gettleman has surprised us before.

That's when he realized Ron didn't button his shirt all the way and he was about to have a wardrobe malfunction.

    • I think it will be hard to not go edge in the second if we go QB first. Say you have Starks, one of Bond/Egbuka, and maybe one Edge (don't have a name to throw out that is end of 1st round projected and may slide)... do you still go Starks? Just curious. I haven't looked into starks much, as I've been focused on QB, WR, and DL prospects.
