Why Ryan Shazier is the BPA.

Smith vs Lucas

Totally agree.

You're pretty much drafting a player in the 1st round (who might not start) for a year later??

I don't think we have that luxury yet.

There is a very strong chance that any WR taken in the late first will sit behind Cotchery and Avant and play a similar % of snaps as a rookie LB with Shazier's skills and experience.

if you ignore your needs but keep your strengths strong, you don't get better.

if you don't get better, you get worse.

our weak spots got weaker this offseason. it makes no sense to ignore them so your strong points can stay strong.

I completely agree with the theory. I'm just saying that there are different ways to put it into practice - again, we're talking about one pick in one round in one year within the context of many years of drafts and free agency periods that build a team. And we aren't a "we're one or two players away from a Super Bowl" team. Gettlemen is building his team. I'm just trying to prepare myself for what I think may happen, which is the selection of a great player on the defensive side of the ball. Someone that is graded as a mid-round prospect that may fall to us. Shazier fits that to me, and I can see him as the type of player that Gettleman and Rivera will love.

Mike Reiss, ESPN NFL Nation reporter covering the New England Patriots (formerly Boston Globe's New England Patriots beat writer)

"After months of studying the NFL draft, we'll start our list of "10 perfect Patriots," ... a select group that we feel would be ideal (and realistic) for the New England Patriots:

...

Ryan Shazier... If not for such a strong draft filled with top-end offensive tackles, pass rushers and wide receivers, a player like Shazier wouldn't be in the conversation/projection for a club picking at No. 29. He's a fast, athletic instinctive linebacker who could fit with any team, but he makes the "10 Perfect Patriots" list because he could potentially fit into the "rare opportunity" category for the club. ... If Shazier drops into the 20s, he is one of the few players we feel could be viewed as worthy of a trade-up consideration by the Patriots."

i'm not going to prepare myself for it. i am prepared to be pissed if it's the choice.

anything other OT or a pass catcher won't have me loving the pick, but if it's a DB i'd still be cool with it. if it's a DE i can understand it. LB, DT, RB, or QB would be horrible. there's no way it would be ok, imo. i don't care if it's a perennial all pro guy, i want this team to get better all the way around and yes, there are other ways of doing it, but 1) we don't have the cap space to take serious strides to actually improve and 2) we aren't doing anything to make thoae areas better. all we do is back ourselves into corners and leave our areas of weakness, weak.

Forget about WR and LT in the first round. First of all there will be no one worthy of drafting at LT in the first, unless Taylor Lewan falls to 28 which is very unlikely. WR is the deepest it has been in years and will be able to find a starter in the 2nd round. Shazier has a nose for the football and is a patient, powerful Tackler. He stands at 6'1'' and weighs 238lbs. Has a 42 inch vertical leap and ran a sub 4.4 40. He is projected as a late 1st round, early 2nd round pick. I think he could really be a great starting SS or WLB for us. He is the closest prospect to a Thomas Davis in this draft and he would be an absolute stud for our defense.

There is a better chance that a 1st round Wr beats out Crotchety and Avant then it is Shazier beating out Blackburn and Klein.

Blackburn and Klein have at least played in this defense and mesh with the players around them.

Crotchety and Avant won't play with Cam until TC. The same time a rookie WR will.

I feel the same way.

I like improving the #2 defense but not at the cost of failing the 18th ranked offense with the 26th ranked passing game.

There's going to be a LOT of people upset on Thursday if we don't take a WR in the first round. There's going to be a LOT of people upset over the next few years if we do take a WR in the first round when they realize that the WR class is very deep but lacks many stars. Essentially, we can get a guy in the 2nd, 3rd, and possibly 4th round with the same value as a guy in the 1st (at 28).

Picking a receiver in the 1st round this year is not going to make our passing offense that much better than picking one later.

Jets blog community mock draft:

30th overall, 49ers take Ryan Shazier

"Shazier has been mocked going as early as pick 20 to the Cardinals but fortunately for Jim Harbaugh & company he is available and cannot be overlooked at pick 30.

...

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio likes players who are versatile, athletic and explosive, attributes that are embodied by Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier.

Shazier is a defensive force whose football instincts and ability have been referred to as freakish. He posted a 42in vertical and a phenomenal 4.38 40-time at Ohio State's ProDay.

Shazier is a versatile player that has played at DE, Inside LB and Outside LB. His 101 solo tackles (24 for loss) last season ranked 3rd in the nation and as a junior he was on pace to set multiple Ohio State tackle records next season.

...

While the 49ers' offense showed sporadic flashes throughout the year, it was the team's defense (which ranked top 5 all season) that kept them relevant in a very competitive NFC West division.

...

At pick #30 the 49ers would be wise to shore up the LB position and maintain its defensive dominance with an immediate impact player like Shazier"

stop it with this idiotic bullcrap.

So drafting a kid that has the athletic ability to be a superstar and TDs replacement is idiotic? When I wrote this post I was looking at this move as a down the road pickup. Don't be surprised if a defensive player is our first pick or maybe since you know everything already, you can enlighten all of us?
