Our new Receiving Corps

Recommended Posts

Drop rates from those charts:

Jerricho Cotchery - 2.6% (76 targets)

Jason Avant - 1.3% (76 targets)

Tiquan underwood - 6.5% (46 targets)

Steve Smith - 5.5% (110 targets)

Brandon LaFell - 7.0% (86 targets)

Ted Ginn - 4.4% (68 targets)

so the new guys had a 10.4 % drop rate and the old guys had 16.9.  That's pretty

significant if correct.  Of course they have to get open.

No....But the website you and Panthro are referencing says Ginn had 3 drops last year.....Do you honestly believe that?

Looking for their source.  Haven't found it yet, but with only 68 targets over a full season, it's possible.  What number do your stats show?

The NFL doesn't track drops, so it's tough to find a measuring stick.

If you use Excel, sometimes you have to use 'paste special' to get it right. Or in my case, sometimes I'll "wash it" through a generic text reader like Notepad.

I'm at work and can't do all that...I swear you wouldn't be disappointed with the wealth of info available at pff...well worth it, just sign up...I have 0 doubt that PFF is a much more reliable source than that other website.

In the past I might have, but I'm more of an 'eyeball' guy than a stat guy and these days, money is going elsewhere.

Well if your an "eyeball guy"...have can you honestly say youve watched enough games to say that Cotchery and Avant have some of the best hands in the league?

I really don't care at this point and its becoming more of an aggravation than anything trying to hash this out. If you and anyone else wants to think they are elite pass catchers..then go ahead I wont stop you.

Ah, you might be debating the wrong guy here.

"Some of the best hands in the league" wasn't my statement, although I'll grant that at least with Avant that's probably accurate.  And there's little doubt that Cotchery is significantly better than LaFell.

What I said was that Cotchery and Avant are 'hands' guys rather than speed guys.  And yes, I've seen enough of both to feel pretty confident in saying that.  And in saying that they're definitely better than the second and third receivers we had last year.

"Best in the league"?  Don't know.  Don't honestly care.  When it comes to second and third receivers, I just want guys that are reliable.  They don't have to be among the top five in stats for me.

can u really argue drop rates which is a statistic with just your eyeball for guys that you saw at most a handful of times play combined?  unless you tell me you watched all steelers and eagles games last year, a high majority of this board including myself havent paid any attention to what jason avant has done the last few years.  he just isnt someone worth paying attention to.

There was pretty extensive talk about Avant being a guy who caught everything thrown to him when we signed him.  It was mentioned that he had one of the lowest drop rates in the league (second lowest per that tweet).

Cotchery I've seen plenty of during his Jets and Steeler days.  Again, enough to know he's a 'good hands' guy and not a burner.

Outside of Smitty we all held our collective breath when the ball was thrown to other receivers.   And even Smitty dropped more than we are accustom to.

Avant and Cotchery will be those reliable hands we need on 3rd and 5 or more.  We might not get as many big plays but we'll keep the chains moving.

I am pretty amazed how some think this new receiving corps is less reliable than 2013.   I loved the big play capabilities Ginn had but you have to catch the ball first before you can make a big play.

The biggest concern I have is getting a chance to build some chemistry between Cam and the New WRs.
