Our new Receiving Corps

Recommended Posts

You wanna see a head coach go absolutely nuts?

Watch him on the sideline when a perfectly executed pass play to a wide open receiver ends with...a drop

Same thing applies to an OC or a receiver coach.  They're all ready to tear their hair out when a receiver drops a pass.  And that shouldn't be terribly hard for us fans to imagine because we do it too.

There are plenty of people who'll take guy who might be a little slower but always catches the ball over a guy who can burn everybody running down the field but might or might not actually catch the ball when he gets where hes going.

And in reality, guys who can do both consistently aren't as easy to find as a lot of fans think they are.

What on earth makes you think these guys have some of the surest hands in football??

Most receivers are known for one of two things: 1) great speed or 2) great hands.

Obviously the ideal is guys who can do both, but the majority of the receivers around the league are known for one or the other.  And yes, there are numerous other aspects to receiving of course (route running, vision, decision making, body control, etc) but most receivers are categorized under one of those two primary aspects of the game.

Cotchery and Avant would both fall under the "hands' designation.  Underwood, by contrast, is a speed guy.

Have you watched that many of their games to really focus on their drop rate? I know you arent using PFF to come up with this because that clearly shows they are not elite in the hands category.

As a matter of a fact ill share that with you.

2013 Drop rate rankings per pff. (with a 25% of snaps played qualifer 94 total players)

34. Steve Smith

36. Jason Avant

38. Ted Ginn, Underwood-- Had the same exact percentage

44. Jericho Cotchery

84. Brandon Lafell

Still need a playmaker. Hoping the draft secures this. Avant and cotchery are as sure handed as they come though and cam will trust them quickly I think.

Yes and younger guys to grow with Cam. All we have now is a bunch of 2 year transition players.

because they dont have speed so they can only hope that.  i doubt most huddlers have seen more than 5 games by Avant who for the last couple seasons was Philly's #4.  Cotchery has always been solid but nothing beyond that.  Underwood is the only new guy I am excited about but his hands are far from proven.  Basically, this is a "try to convince myself feel good thread."

Are you sure those rankings are ordered by drop rate?

I ask because of this...

Pro Football Focus @PFF

Lowest drop rates over last 6 years 1.Larry Fitzgerald(3.4) 2.Jason Avant(4.3) 3.Kevin Walter(4.3) 4.Malcom Floyd(4.5) 5.Sidney Rice(4.9)

If you've got the percentages, please post them.

Went back and looked. Avant amazingly did not drop a pass in 2012 so that helped his 5 year average.

But here's the percenatage of drops.

2013

Smith -7.25%

Avant- 7.32%

Ginn - 7.69%

Underwood - 7.69%

Cotchery 8.00%

Lafell 14.04%

2012

Avant 0 %----

Ginn 0%( only 2 catches)

Lafell 6.38 %

Smith 9.88%

Cotchery 10.53%

Underwood 12.50%

2011

Lafell 5.26 %

Avant 5.45%

Cotchery 5.88%

Smith 7.06 %

Ginn 13.6 %

Underwood 25 %

2010

Avant 7.26%

Lafell 15.56%

Smith 17.86%

Cotchery 18 %

Ginn 25%

Are you able to cut and paste the raw numbers (because there's some discrepancy here)?
