Chip Kelly: Cutting DeSean a 'football decision'

Recommended Posts

I know I'm going to probably get some flak for this, but outside of the gang ties allegation, let's really be honest with ourselves:

Both on and off the field, Desean Jackson is more like Steve then we care to admit.

What "Gang Allegations"?

That story (the actual assertion, not the article) was retracted/dismissed by it's author

He was only speculating on the Eagles reasons, which we know had more to do with Jackson, the coach and his teammates.

But yes; both Steve and DeSean, are crazy receivers (though you can argue Jackson has actually gotten into less trouble than Steve relative to their tenures in the NFL).

Not sure that's a compliment or not. Gettleman doesn't have a footprint in the league yet. A rookie trying to be like another rookie, great!

He doesn't mean it as a compliment, but the bigger reality is that it's actually a lousy comparison.

For one, Kelly is a head coach, not a GM.  Howie Roseman is the Eagles GM.  And if you wanted to compare Roseman to someone on the Panthers, the most accurate side by side I've seen would be Marty Hurney (check their respective backgrounds and you'll see why).

The better reason it's a lousy comparison though?  Ego.

Like a lot of driven, successful head coaches, Kelly's known to have an enormous ego (think Steve Spurrier).  Some would call that a bad thing, while others would say that's part of what got him where he is (make your own decision on that front).

So what about Gettleman? If you wanna try and find someone who's worked with Gettleman who'll talk about him having a big ego, good luck on that search.  Most who know him would say lack of self-promotion is one of the big reasons he never made it into a GM's chair till now.

I seriously doubt the OP knew these things about either of the guys he's comparing here.  If you do know it, then it's not at all hard to see why the suggestion of Kelly as a "Gettleman wannabe" is just patently ridiculous.  Kelly's ego puts him beyond being a "wannabe" anything.

Considering the actual pictures and stories I've seen, the "gang ties" are really pretty factual.

Now he may not be going out with them on hits or deals, but its pretty evident that he's close, through friendships AND his recording studio, with plenty of gang-bangers.

It's funny seeing random middle aged white guys on the internet talking about how they "know" he was directly involved with gangs.

Similar, but not very. Smitty has one of the best work ethic's in the league and is disciplined and has a special diet, etc. Jackson doesn't show up for camp, is lazy during games and practices, AND is a complete moron who has given up touchdowns for idiotic celebrations, ending in turnovers instead of touchdowns. Not to mention Smith is a much better receiver in general. Was faster in his prime, has better hands, and is better at routes and getting open.

If we are talking about the first half of Steve Smith's career, maybe. If we are talking about them both in their current form, I see the on field fiery trash talking comparison, but off the field? No effing way. I mean I'm only basing this off of their respective instagram accounts, because fug Twitter, but Jackson was literally nothing but shitty photoshop edits of himself, constant clubbing, showing off his nice stuff and tons of ignorant commenters. I had to unfollow him. Smith's seems to usually be motivational, charitable in some way or family related.

I'm not saying someone's instagram account is the official measuring stick of their life, but it does offer quite an intimate glimpse into their personal lives.

Back on topic, I think I'm going to know quite a few very pissed off Cowboys' fans this fall, the Redskins' are looking good, at least on paper lol. I think Philly made a terrible "football decision."

Except I went out of my way to point out that he was/is NOT *directly* involved.

So fug you poo-for-brains for either your utter lack of reading comprehension or for attempting to put words in my mouth. Your choice.

You sure are a nice guy, then again you spend your free time attacking athletes on twitter, so not exactly a shock.

This is tiger7_88 going out of his way to say that Jackson was not involved with gangs.

Maybe you should just go back and edit your post.

Pretty sure it was a financial decision. Jackson was working a 15 mil contract (I believe). Cutting him allows them to extend Foles and if st Nick keeps the ball rolling hes going to cost a nice penny.

I don't know more believe that DeSean Jackson has ties with "plenty" of gang-bangers than I believe in a man in the moon.  This gang-banger stuff is way overblown (which is my point).  When you grow up in certain areas, you are just going to know people (or people who know people).  Sometimes it's just an indirect tie, an acquaintanceship or whatever.  That doesn't necessarily make you a bad person.  If you think that Jackson is the only person in sports and entertainment that knows questionable or bad characters then you are sadly mistaken.  It's just something that many people and families have to deal with to one degree or another.  Jackson may be an idiot for throwing up purported gang signs, but he is just trying to be "cool" however misguided that is. When you become a star, people from your neighborhood who knew you, as well as their associates, will try to get pics with you, autographs,  or just be a hanger-on to different degrees because that gives them a certain amount of status or swag.  it doesn't mean that any of the relationships are serious. That's just the way it is.

Kelly probably didn't like Jackson's contract, first and foremost, and along with that he didn't appreciate D-Jax hinting around for even more money (as he had done previously). Secondly, he didn't like the fact that Jackson had the big head and showed it. Jackson took his rock star status (if you will) too far in Kelly's mind. I am not faulting Kelly for any of that, but the gang crap was just a cover for the real issues.

1. I never a single time said that Desean Jackson was the only person in the history of the world to hang out with gang members.  Much like Red, that is just a case of putting words in my mouth.

2. When someone says the following, he's admitting to much more than "indirect ties".

"...if you see signs or if you see me in pictures with affiliated gang members or whatever the case may be, that sign I am throwing up is to connect me with me and my boys"

When gang members are "your boys", that is way more than indirect ties.

Steve Smith comes from the same culture and area that Desean Jackson does.  The only "boys" I see Steve Smith trying to "connect" to are his own damn sons.

If a person doesn't want his reputation to be affiliated with gangs or gang members, its usually the best move to UN-affiliate yourself with gangs and gang members... instead of trying to "connect" with them.

You are the one that used the word "plenty".

Whatever, I explained it. You reject it. That's fine.  I do believe that I know more than you about the situation and more than you could ever know, but there is no need for me to go there.

The gang stuff is way overblown as has been proven by not only Kelly's words, the NFL FO's judgment, Jackson's repeated denials himself, and others.  At this point the whole discussion is pretty much moot.

There was no turnaround. None of the teams wanted to win the division. They won it by default. It won't be the same next year.

even tho nick foles and shady mccoy shredded non-nfc east defenses as well. and the defense completely changed. but ok.
