A little insight on the Hakeem Nicks story

I don't know that I would refer to Hakeem Nicks himself plainly stating that we made him an offer as nothing more than another "story".

Nicks is the ONLY source that said we made him any kind of offer.  So yeah, I find that credible.  A guy who almost nobody was interested in made a claim of an offer, yet at the same time saying the GM of that team told him he'd probably be better off going to another team.  Yep, nothing questionable or self-serving about that.

My take, we only wanted him on a vet minimum prove-it deal, but he wanted something bigger...and Indy gave it to him.  I doubt an actual offer was made, just a discussion about the parameters and Nicks made it clear he wanted more.  So Gettleman said he'd be better off going elsewhere.

But since nothing about the specifics ever came out, we can only guess.  And it really doesn't matter anyway...Nicks is a Colt, and we'll have a new receiver in about a week and a half.

Why would Gettleman make an offer, or even discuss a contract, to a guy he didn't want? That's just silly.

Denying we had any interest in him by calling him a liar just because the story wasn't corroborated is pretty silly, too. What would Nicks have to gain from lying? He had already signed with the Colts when he said we offered one to him, so it's not like the money was changing. I just don't see any reason for him to make something like that up and it seems like it would diminish his reputation in NFL circles (for lying), if anything.

The elevation of Gettleman to this infallible status is a bit disconcerting. The bottom line is, the "plan" wasn't to be in as much a mess at WR and OL as we are right now. Gettleman pursued both Collins and Nicks, and he failed. It makes perfect sense to wonder why.

Blind homer faith.  Gettleman did a fantastic job of assembling a roster last year and I hope he can pull it off again this year, but yeah, some are going overboard acting like the guy is the greatest football mind in history because of it.  On the flip side, because he didn't resign a couple of guys we liked and cut Smitty, some are acting like he's all of a sudden a moron.  The truth is almost certainly somewhere in between the two.

Hell, I remember years ago much of this fanbase considered Marty Hurney a wizard of manipulating the salary cap to our advantage.
