A little insight on the Hakeem Nicks story

What "our fan base" wanted or wants is pretty irrelevant....considering that most know little to nothing about putting together an NFL team or evaluating talent. (even though most think they do).

You are correct, it was our GM who actually made him a contract offer.

And let (told) him to go elsewhere.....and our GM is the one who knows the most about Nicks.

If Gettleman has really wanted him, we would have gotten him.

Yeah it isn't like Nicks made the decision to go play for another team or anything.

That logic sounds like a guy who tells his friends that he actually broke up with his girlfriend, instead of admitting he got dumped.

My guess is Gettleman was interested in Nicks only if Nicks was motivated and had his head on straight. Gettleman probably didn't get the impression Nicks was hungry when they met and quickly lost interest.

I really think it is this simple.

Based on who we ended up with, my guess it went down something like this...

Gettleman: "Hakeem - we'll offer you a contract, but we've got some young kids on the roster and I'll probably bring in a couple more.  Do you think you can be a good mentor?"

Hakeem: "not really my style"

Gettleman: "ok, thanks for coming in. good luck"

It's speculation, but apparently we offered him a decent prove it contract. The Colts offered him a more incentive based contract with the possibility of more $.

Seems like Nicks came back to us and Gettleman wasn't going to have a bidding war with the Colts, so he let them have him.

I have a sneaky suspicion Gettleman might do something crazy in the draft, like go WR/WR. Our WR core would more than likely instantly become a strength, much like he did with DT last season.

No we tried to lock him in long term for less. Gettleman thinking he's the smartest man in the room again. Gettleman instead of giving him that prove it deal wanted him to take that prove it deal and make it his long term deal. I'm sorry, but Nicks knows his worth and he will take less for a year, but not for four.

With the way some are dismissing him all the sudden you would think that we already have a #1 WR on our roster.

We will... And we will all know his name by close of business 9May2014.....

It is funny, the wishy-washiness of an internet forum. Lots wanted him, but put off like they could care less after he signed elsewhere.... I dont care cause he didnt sign here, he is insignificant in the grand scheme...

a lot of assuming going on here.

Which is probably all we'll ever have.

At the time, there were stories that we'd made an offer and others that said we had no interest.  No way to know what was really true.

The Panthers don't discuss contracts or contract offers.  Nicks could say we lowballed him or say we offered him the moon and there'd be no way to corroborate either story.

Speculation is all we've got.  But hey, it's a message board...

I don't know that I would refer to Hakeem Nicks himself plainly stating that we made him an offer as nothing more than another "story".

Is there anything to back it up?  As mentioned, Nicks can say anything he wants since the Panthers don't discuss contract details.

Remember, it was also Nicks who said that Dave Gettleman suggested this wasn't the best spot for him.
